How hard is it to turn an FNC into a short barrel gun? I have never had one so I have no familiarity with them. Can you swap uppers like an AR? I am primarily trying to turn a RR into one of the short tactical DSA guns. Can it be done easily?

Like this Sigfla. I don't know if it can be done, but I'm sure going to try when I find an FNC.

Sorry, I said FNC but I meant FN FAL. I would like to configure one like the NFA only DS arms guns (SA58 OSW's?). Sorry for the confusion.

Helluva neat pic of an FNC dan. d. I always loved Pacino's cut down FNC in "Heat." Standard forend but really short barrel.

Ahhh, looks like ARS can cut one down for me to 13 inches. It would be a firebreather for sure. Would still like to know if I can just get an upper like an AR and bolt it on though. Hate to cut a nice gun up if it isn't needed.

Well I called DS today and they told me it was probably ok but the girl wasn't 100%. It seems the registered part of a FAL is the upper receiver according to DS. That means I would need to put the short front end on the guns current upper. No big deal as it is a sample but would have been nice if it was a simple swap out.

do you have a barrel wrench? Taking barrel off receiver is tuff, then realign and headspace.

Interesting! This doesn't sound correct, but I don't know for certain. Just recall seeing lower receivers for sale to build up from parts kits. In fact, mine is an Imbel receiver. l'll have to check my FAL and see where the serial number is located. I remember that BATF&E had a hard time deciding whether the registered portion of the FNC was the lower or upper.

Dear Mr. Bardwell:

This refers to your letter of September 14, 1998, asking, in
reference to the semiautomatic Fabrique Nationale manufactured FNC
rifles, whether the upper or lower receiver has been determined to
be the frame or receiver as defined in Title 18 United States Code
(U.S.C.), Chapter 44, section 921(a)(3)(B).

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has previously
determined that the lower receiver of the FNC rifles is the frame
or receiver and, as such, the lower receiver is the proper location
of the unique serial number for each firearm of this model.

We trust that the foregoing has been responsive to your inquiry.
If we can be of any further assistance, please contact us.

Sincerely yours,
