I went to the range today renting out an Uzi, M16, AK47, and 1928 Thompson.

Uzi - really disliked it. Grip safety ruins it IMO.
M16 - Good. But like any other FA, past 3 rounds, not that controllable. Gassy to the nose. Had a bad jam.
AK47 - Didn’t jam like the M16. Limited sight options. Your expected AK. Easy to control when comparing burst fire. Bad ammo.
Thompson - Long and heavy. Awkward mag release.

If you wiped market prices away from each and said I had to keep one FA gun, probably a 95% chance I’d keep the Mac given all of the lage items. The AK47 would be runner up with an M16 close by.

Am I some odd duck or do others feel this way too? I’m not saying the Lage’d Mac is a miracle gun, but it straight up stomps out these other guns with its combinations, aftermarket attention that gets it to work, etc. These things should sell for double what they do.

Man I gotta say you need to try some of the newer model BRP tube guns. I know a lot of the old heads look down on tube guns. But for what the BRP guns are at this point in my life, I have to say they are the sleeper in the market. That being said I have a Mac10, m11/9, M11a1 and they are runners up to my BRP Guns. YMMV

IMHO you must take your experience with the rental guns with a grain of salt. You shot rental guns. To me, a rental gun compared to most collector guns are night and day. My first machinegun was a Colt M16 RR. To this day, if i had to go into harm's way, I would want to be carrying a Colt M16. As long as it was clean with a quality upper, I could shoot around 1,000 rounds, pull the bolt/carrier assembly, wipe it down, apply more lubrication and run another 1,000 rounds. I love the MGI rate reducing buffer for rifle calibers and the Enidine hydraulic buffer for pistol caliber. Rifle rounds develop lots of heat from friction of the bullets going down the barrel. Whe going to the range I would always bring several uppers. I would run four 30 round mags or one Beta C, push two pins, install a fresh upper, and do it again. By the time I cycled through the uppers, the first one would be cool. You can't do that with an AK. I own several 7.62x39 uppers. With the MGI rate reducing buffer the M16 shoots so much softer than an AK. I've shot a full size and a Krink RR AKs. They pounded me compared to the M16 in 7.62x39. Part of why a RR AK is about the same market value as a Colt M16 is the AK is such a cheaply made gun and so much more abusive to shoot, that very few AKs were registered. Who wants to spend $200 tax on a $79 gun?

The full size Uzi was the first open bolt subgun I shot. It seemed like I was shooting doubles but the owner said that I was shooting singles. I finally had to put one round in the mag. It still felt like I shot a double. The gun jerked when I pulled the trigger to release the bolt and jerked again when the round fired. An Uzi is just not something I ever wanted to own. They are a great subgun with a lot of history.

I had a Savage built M1A1 Thompson. The mag change is different. If you are right handed, you reach up with your left hand, wrap your fingers around the mag while you push the mag release up with your left thumb, then pull the mag out. I found rolling the gun clockwise with my right hand rolled the mag slot up where I could see it. Mine ran well and was easy to get singles. I am 6'-7" but I find the stock just a little bit too long. I ended up selling it as I was only shooting it once a year.

Again rental guns can be so hit or miss. How old is the barrel? Is the gas port worn so it is too big and the gun is over gassed. When was the last time the recoil spring was replaced? What is in it for a buffer, if it has one? There is quite a few small items that make a big difference in the shooting experience. I like my Mac style RRs. I think that the market value is at a point now where big innovation will come to this family of RRs. Just five years ago, would Lage have brought a $3,000 upper to this market? I don't think so. I see big things happening soon. With the bar set at $3,000, there is certainly profit margin to bring huge innovation to the very prolific family of transferable machineguns. YMMV.

If I could only have 1 mg I'd take my m16a2 or my fleming hk sear. Both are just too useful compared to my m10(or the m11/380 I'm waiting on the atf to approve).

I love my m10 but the m16 is just more fun. Same with the fleming sear as I have 9 hosts for it including pending ones.

The M11/9 with the CF-W bolt is great, it really transforms the gun. I love my Sten MK II too, very smooth and easy to keep on target. I can double tap bowling pins all day with it. Reising M50 is a unique gun. Delayed blowback, fires from a closed bolt. Very light and accurate especially in semi auto mode. It has terrible magazines though.

I like FA UZI ( again I grew up watching them in the 80s and wanting them ) and I am use to 1911 so the grip saftey did not bother me all that much + worst case just get hurrican tape ..

If I could get one non beltfeed FA it would still be a M16 RR or HK sear pack ..Cauase who does not want a M16 or a MP5

I concur with Bro Evil for the most part on his comments.

And to the original poster...I agree as well with the guns you shot. Now with the understanding that ALL MGs are fun as heck and should be loved by owners...doing the deep pesky dive here.... I'll say it...I dont "like" shooting my Tommy. I bought it...like the AK47 - simply bc I "needed" it in my small collection of MGs. Got tired of friends asking " Ya got a Tommy? Ya got an AK?"...hahaha.

That said I rarely shoot my M11/9 (w lage ) or M10/45. I mean rarely. And I shoot every couple weeks or so for maybe 3 hrs at a time. Shot yday in fact. What do I ALWAYS bring with me to the range regardless of why else I was going down there (I always have a gun that needs testing or tinkering - the primary reason for going)? Why...It's the MP5 , MP5SD, and Uzi. The MP5 is simply "the best" .

Back to bro evil...man I hear ya on the double shot Uzi. Every time I shoot the full size Im thinking "did one or two bullets just fly out- sure felt and sounded like two..but I'm on semi!". Every.Time.

Tommy- too heavy. awkward to handle IMO.
Uzi- heavy bolt sliding around. chugga chugga. too slow?
Sten- piss poor sights and mags suck to hand load.
M16. I dont shoot a lot of - never have. I guess I like SMGs and beltfeds skipping over a lot of the rifle stuff.
AK47---come on! who likes shooting one after say they've shot one a few dozen times. They wiggle all over Gods creation. Hah.

MP5-- perfection.

Now...just yday I took a new SMG out. Sterling. And I'm here to tell you its tons better than the sten and dare I say more fun than the Uzi....and reaching up twds MP5 status but not quite getting there. Yday was tghe first time Ive ever seen, handled, or shot a Sterling and it was a blast. I posted my comments in the sten/sterling section on Uzitalk . Truly a nice gun. I'm shocked that an open bolt tube gun can be so nice to be honest.

I've never found the M-16 hard to control at all. Very nice to shoot.

The AK likes to dance around a bit more and smack your shoulder, but I love shooting those.

The Thompson, love that too. Could shoot that all day.

The Uzi let me down a little, but the Mini Uzi, wow!

Man -- this is all over the place . Me Uzi -- awesome . Mini Uzi way awesome but very fast . Ak beats you to death but the 7.62 x39 on an M16 lower is way smoother and more fun . M16 in .223/5.56 fun . M11/9 -- the only redeeming thing about these junk guns are CF slow fire bolts and Richard Lage accessories . I've never shot a Thompson but do own all of the rest of the guns I commented on. In fact I own 3 Macs LOL !!!!!!

From a sheer shooting perspective - cFw in my m11/9 then my mp5 is then a FNC

I miss my FNC, but I don’t miss worrying about parts for it

I found the M16 hard to shoot, and the Mp5 a superlative. Found the mac a bargain, but not as good as the mp5. That being said, it's becoming more awesome all the time, and the max-31 gives you something you can't get even in an MP5.

I look forward to trying an AK and the Uzi.

That being said, renting is a smart idea if all you wanna do is blast occasionally! My Dad always said if it floats, flies, or flirts it's cheaper to rent it. Well add full autos to that list.

To me the mp5 is without doubt the smoothest peanut butter.

The MAC and Uzi are crunchy.

Both are yummy but I’d rather smooth for most consumption.

You gotta shoot a sterling, legitimately a life changing experience when it comes to shooting. It just works and it works very well. If I could only keep one it would be hard to let the sterling go, but the versatility of the Mac is hard to argue with. I’m glad I dont have to make that choice, is it cheating if I say both haha.

Link to my thread after shooting my sterling for the first time, caution giddy overload. No other gun I’ve ever shot has made me feel that way.

sorry to be thread jacking all over the boards about the Sterling - but mine just arrived the other day after a 13 mo. form 4 wait time. It's a very very fun smooth gun to shoot. So much nicer than the sten and prob even the uzi. It aint no MP5 but its reaching for that.

Now...my gun shoots far down and to the right. I just KY windage 'd it the other day but I do need to get it sighted in however that might be done. I havent even looked. Hopefully it can be sighted in .
