I've seen some AR's with the selector indicator lettering painted (fire = red, safe = white, etc.). Any tips for how to do this without getting paint all over the receiver wall?

Brownells sells this paste stick (in red, white, and something else) that you rub over the letters which fills it in. You wipe the top part off so only the letters have the colors on it. Let dry and voila.

I use Testor's model paint, fill in with toothpick and wipe excess away with cleaning patch with alcohol.

Thanks guys. With the Testors, do you wipe the excess once and let it dry - then remove the smear plume with thinner? I tried cleaning it before it dried and messed up the paint sitting in the lettering.
