Anybody here ever build a HK .308 style shorty pistol? If so, how hard is this project?

...man, parts kits sure dried up!

I had a 51 once and a buddy had a Vollmer 51 B.

I remember the 51B being heavy, awkward and occasionally fussy to feed (keep in mind this was all German parts built by the best in the biz.)

My 51 was a G3 kit built onto a FMP receiver (HK contract) and even as a fixed stock version with a MG buffer it really put it to you. I can't imagine how bad a 51K version would be.

The real problem is parts with original factory barrels are basically gone. If you ever do track one down PTR receivers are basically HK contract and I'd recommend having RDTS build it as a 51 improved. This will be a costly operation all the way around.

Or you could try and get a Vector 51 running, but honestly they seem to be more trouble than they are worth IMO.

Can't tell you anything about building them but a friend owns a 51K built on a PTR receiver by a popular smith. It destroyed the nylon guide ring on the recoil rod in less then 100 rds. This build uses the MP5 type of cocking support set up. The owner is a member here maybe he will comment.

Now the Vector 51's are GTG. Two friends own them and we've shot the snot out of them. Just drop a pack in & blast away. I'm not a Vector fan but these 51's have impressed me.

Thanks Clicker for the intro:fart

The first time I pulled the trigger on the 51k was like standing beside a stick a dinomite when it goes off. It was a blast. After about two mag dumps the honeymoon was over and I could only get 2 to 3 round off. The nylon washer on the recoil rod was so chewed up that the carrier would ride over it.

I talked to the smith that built it and he said send it back. His guess is that I need a different locking piece. Unfortunely I haven't had time to send it back. Figured when I get the time, I would try a different locking piece. (I hate shipping a gun.)

If I can get it to run, it will be the coolest HK in my collection (even thought it has no pracital purpose). Giant fireball with little recoil was a rush to shoot, even thought the experence didn't last very long:flame

Good luck,
Jeff

Yes they are a hoot. Here's the one I built. There is a lot of work to build one of these.

Besides the damaged washer, how was the quality of the build?

The build looks great. I think once I get the locking piece figured out it will become a favority gun to shoot. Definent a croud pleaser.

Send me a PM if you want to know the builder,
Jeff

I have a Vector 51P I'd like to get converted to a K. I tried contacting that RTDS outfit, but apparently they don't want my business.

Try 918-781-3939 Jeff Walter (AKA Ghilliebear). He builds a great gun for a great price. Just remember you will have to purchase at lease 300-450 worth are parts for the conversion. (New locking piece, Cocking tube/Handle, forearms and ??)
