Why did Mecgar stop making Uzi mags?

Probably due to the endless supply of cheap surplus mags.

I don't know about that "endless" part of your statement regarding surplus magazines.
Not much supply of the 32 round mags anymore.
It is more likely that when IMI / IWI stopped producing the guns the need for brand new magazines went down.

Mec-Gar definitely made the 32rd mags sold by AA in the distinctive cardboard boxes. Back in the early 90's I decided I needed to buy some more Uzi mags since it looked like they might be hard to get. I ordered them through an FFL. Much to my chagrin, they were not black parked/painted with production numbers like my earlier ones. My dealer called AA and they told him that these were made in Italy by Mec-Gar and were made to IMI standards. I can't remember if I couldn't return them or not, but they went into a box where they remain to this day. They're beautifully finished in polished blue, and individually plastic wrapped with light grease. I'm sure they run great. I just never cared for the look. A few years ago, a member here advertised 30 of the black painted IMI marked ones in the same AA blue and white boxes for like $12 so I bought them all. At that time, no one was interested at that price, given that yet another member here, "Bocephus" was selling the German surplus mags unissued for $7. I believe they are "commercial" hence the black paint over park finish as opposed to the grey parked military issue. Just my personal preference.

All the surplus German mags were military, not commercial.

The best deal ever on uzi mags was the 50 pack of 'slightly rusted' mags from Robert RTG. Only two of the ones I got had any rust on them, and that was just a spot.

Of course. You misunderstood my post. It was confusing I admit. I was referring to MY black painted mags. I brought up the German ones to show why MY seller couldn't sell his at $12 when the German milsurp were going for $7.

Back in 2019 I bought a RR Uzi MG and picked up a second box "o" 50 pack from RTG. It was the last one and that option was removed from the website.

Minor derail, I think the Uzi surplus mags are an incredible value at price.

Derail- Can I beg an answer - what happened to Bocephus? He was THE guy in the early 2000’s w so many $100-$125 RomyDong ak parts kits - doesn’t appear to (anymore) be a userid name here - is he still active on any forum or selling, and doing well?

What a great memory. I as well bought the fifty pack. As I recall with shipping it came out around $5 a mag. My box ended up having 52. 50 were about perfect with a little freckle rust. The remaining two looked as if they had been left in a puddle of blood. They were not only rusty, they were extensively pitted. I took those two to my bench wire wheel and after cleanup they worked fine.

what happened to Bocephus?
I was hoping someone knew and would chime in. Great guy and great mags.

Another member here had a bunch of IMI commercial imported by Action Arms with the black semi gloss finish. He tried to sell them on here for $15/mag and had no takers. Bocephus had his at 5 and 7. I contacted him and he sold me all of them for $10/mag. I was leery of having spent all that money on mags. I'll never use 90% of them. Oh well.... More to stuff to sell off in the next few years as I get too old for all this fun.

As far as the MecGar mags... If I thought there was a market I'd sell them now. Unfortunately I paid retail for them direct from AA right before they shut down. I think they were like $25. All came in the blue and white Uzi boxes with the mag inside wrapped in plastic and a light coat of oil. I remember being pretty unhappy when I got them and they weren't the painted IMI ones.

Bocephus was great to deal with. I purchased many boxes of his mags when they were plentiful and cheap.

I hope he is doing well.

Long ago I bought one of the USA 50 round stick Uzi mags. It was dirt cheap. I haven't shot with it since 2015, IRRC. The steel is so soft that the lips have to be bent back in place for each time it's fired. I also have one 40 rounder that I've only shot a few times and that was a long time ago; and it's a good mag. For big 9mm Uzi mag capacity, the 71 round drum is the way to go.
MHO, YMMV, etc. Be well.

2A O Yes would like to buy a Suomi converted drum as well... they had 2 companies that did them, one was better vs. the other (don't recall the names off hand) Gunjoker (Gunbroker) had the less desirable one for $750. Only interested in the "best" ones made of course. Read about them in Dave's awesome UZI Book.
