Based on what you've written, sounds like you should try a Sterling. Way cool vanilla subgun in a common shootable caliber, much nicer than a Sten but still loads of history, ultra smooth, compact, and all-around sweet shooter. Only downside is, one-track pony.

Thank you for everyone's input. I really appreciate it. We already have some money put aside for the kids and add to it when we can. The 3 m11/9s are theirs to do what they want with, if they would want to sell them or keep them. I'd hope they would keep them and so far they all have a pretty decent interest in firearms but not old enough to really appreciate what the transferables actually are. I found a couple of ranges that are about 2-3 hours away that have a few for rent that I've never fired before, the BRP STG, Sterling, original M76 so working on finding a day to travel out there now. The kids and wife are all over the place as far as what they like. Wife likes the Thompson, and the rest are split between the M16, uzi and PPSH-41/Suomi M31 so really all over the place. A place semi close always has a Sterling MK7 that looks really interesting. I'm not really interested in the RDIAS or HK sears and all but they might be the smartest move here.

To follow up with my original post decided to go with the BRP STG U45/9SF package. It really is an amazing package and genius design. Nothing is welded to the receiver so changing calibers and parts is effortless. After handling several options I was considering this one seemed like the perfect choice. After talking with Brian from BRP and handling his other models we ultimately moved our MACs along and purchased the Thompson and Suomi versions from BRP as well. The firearms from Brian and BRP are outstanding and if you ever have the chance to fire one I wouldn’t pass it up. I was blown away by the accuracy, how controllable they are and how robust the design is. And Since the MAC market has exploded over the last few years we took the leftover funds from the MACs and original balance saved for the initial mg purchase and made some investments for the kids which seems like the smartest option.

Get a Thompson

If you want to own a subgun that has by far the greatest history and intrigue, as well as an incredible range of accessories, then get a Thompson. You should attend a show and shoot, such as the annual event held by Tracie Hill and The American Thompson Association. If you don't leave that event hooked on a TSMG, then something is wrong. Our sister board, Machinegunboards.com is THE site for Thompsons, if you want to take a look.

Just my $.02

You def want to shoot a Thompson.
I don’t think you can form a cogent opinion
on them without actually holding one.

Imho, they have a pretty unique look
(And imho more importantly feel)
as far as subguns go.

You’ll prob either love em or hate em.

Have you shot any of them? I was surprised when I did. I thought the MP5 was too smooth - uneventful basically. The Uzi requires a weird grip given you must fully press the mag safety and it’s a very square grip (your hand feels like it’s at a right angle to the gun - weird). The sten was way more fun than I would have guessed.

I’d say a Sten you wouldn’t regret. Cheap too. Thompsons have a veryyy long length of pull and a weird angle on the stock that makes them ride upward. I think I’ll never own an Uzi or Thompson.

Thank you for all the responses. I’ve shot a few Thompsons and they’re definitely not for everyone. I prefer the M1A1 version with the horizontal grip and 30rd stick magazines. Brian and BRP did an amazing job with their version of the Thompson. I was really surprised with how they made their version feel, handle and shoot very closely to an original. It may not be an actual Thompson but I’m very pleased with it. They were able to take the best features from all the models and kind of mold it into one.

The M31 Suomi model is probably my favorite. Minus some small differences like the charging handle location it looks and fires just like an actual Suomi. To be honest I prefer the charging handle on the side rather then the rear.

If I could only own 1 machine gun it would be the STG-U9SF/45. They handle very smoothly and are amazingly accurate and easy to control. Plus it’s built like a tank.

All these have new parts currently being produced as well as top notch customer service/support and are built like tanks. I’m very happy with them and they seem like the best option to pass onto the kids. They can shoot them without worrying too much, very easy to work on and seem like they’ll last for a very long time. I’ve shot most of the common transferables out there and a few of the not so common ones. Brian and BRP definitely have something impressive going on with his subguns and I never would have even considered them until I held and shot them. Definitely the most underrated subguns in my opinion.

Although I have not shot a BRP, I have an STG-U9SF/45siting at my dealer's and will take possession of it this summer. Waiting on the ATF... This is my fourth sub gun, and I can't wait to take it home. Brian was really easy to work with and very professional.
