I bought a Galil, 7.62 NATO, folding stock, wooden foregrips, tritium night sights, 2 25-round magazines about 25 years ago, and haven't put 100 rounds through it. No longer need it. If I sold it, what should I ask for it?

Post barrel length. and if it has a bayonet lug. It really makes a difference in price.

Serial number starts with MR. Does that answer that question?

Does appear to have a bayonet lug: can't think what else it could be, although it's 6" from the end of the barrel, which is somewhat farther than on my Garand.

From forward end of ejection port to the first hole on the flash suppressor is 20". Also has a folding bipod.

Can't offer you a good deal until I know what a fair price is.

I'll just have to make do with my Garand.

The MR prefix is a good indication that it's a Magnum Research gun. Most of the Magnum Research .308 ARMs I've seen didn't have a rubber pad on the folding buttstock.

It's a pity; a member by the name of Darkest2000 had some incredible photos of a pair of early MR ARMs in the Official Galil Library thread. I was going to point you towards them but it appears he's taken them down. However, there are still some great photos of a MR Galil by member Galil30 - page 4, post #77 in the same thread. Is this what your Galil looks like?

Given that it's an early Magnum Research Galil, and has the right kind of bayonet lug, etc, etc, I would say it's worth in neighborhood of $3,400.00......... at least that's around what I'm planning on paying in three or four months (there's so much stuff coming on the market right now that I'm being bled white).

It would be helpful if you could post a photo,..... or at least more info; does it come with the box, documentation and accessories? Does it have a rubber pad on the buttstock? Is the firing pin spring loaded? etc, etc, etc.

Right now, $3400 for your Galil is on the high side. There have been several .308 on Gunbroker in the $3000 to $3400 range w/o any bidders. If it has the original box and accessories, it is worth more then without. As is, and without the box, I would say your rifle is worth around $3000 max. I wish you luck on the sale of your Galil. I've only seen one .308 Magnum Research ARM for sale in the last two years - it's a very specific type of Galil rifle. Granted, the market is soft right now but true collector items are still moving.

I've also read that some Magnum Research Galils are California compliant since they don't have Galil written on them. I *don't* know if this is true or not since I don't live in California........ but it's something to look into.

I would go slow if you're looking to get the max out of the sale. Do your homework.

Ditto!!
3k if it's in pristine condition.
Having the box and accessories should add a hundred or two more, but at this time, it seems to be a buyers market as far as high end rifles go.

I saved one of darkest's pics, but for the death of me i lost it. If it looks like this galil here, then it is the rarer model, and is definitely worth upwards $3000

Summary - description of my Galil

Thank you all for your help so far. Let me restate and update info on the gun:

It's a 7.62 NATO Galil I purchased new about 25 years ago. It's had less than 100 rounds through the barrel. It's in really nice shape, with no rust, scrapes, or abrasions on it. Pictures: www.Picasaweb.com/halsdavis3/Galil
Yes, it does look like http://www.sturmgewehr.com/bhinton/Galil/GALIL_ARM7.62ad.jpg, except that the magazine in the picture looks plastic, and mine are metal. Foregrip is wood. Folding stock with rubber buttpad. Receiver stamped with "ACTION ARMS LTD PHILA PA", serial number MR 07737. 20" from forward end of ejection port to rearmost hole in the flash suppressor. Does have bayonet lug and folding bipod. Don't have the original box or original accessories, except that I do have 2 25-round magazines. [whoops! can't find but one magazine right now] Don't have documentation. Have no clue on whether firing pin is spring loaded.

So, any change in the value estimate?

And, how do I go about selling it, and then legally getting it to the buyer?

Braindeaf
maybe I could trade it for a motorcycle

What you have is a Magnum Research to Action Arms Limited transitional Galil. It was transfered to Action Arms when Magnum Research lost the distributorship and Action Arms milled off the Magnum Research info and stamped in their info. The receiver should have a long narrow milled out area where the Action Arms info is stamped. Your Galil is worth $3000 in this economic situation. I hope you find a person willing to give you more then that in any event. I have purchased 2 Magnum Research Galil's just like yours during the last 18 months. Both in excellent condition. Paid $2800 for one and $2725 for the other. I hope this info helps. B.Q.

Thank you. You are most kind. I guess now I need to look into the costs of sale, and then finding a buyer.

Sir, what you have there is a very fine-looking rifle. I wouldn't recommend selling it, unless you really have to. I would personally be all over it if it was in my cards, and i bet alot of others on here would say the same thing.
Best of luck!

Thank you. She is purty, isn't she? But, she doesn't do me any good sitting in my gun locker, and it looks like I could trade her for a good commuter motorcycle, allowing me to take the HOV lane to my volunteer work at the prison. Maybe someone will see how purty she is and make me an offer I can't refuse.

I just bought 6 IMI rifles over the past 60 days.

The rifle would be worth 3,000.00; granted it is in prime condition after a close inspection; especially since you only have one magazine (nothing else) that comes with it.

But even at that price, it could take a while to sell it. I have seen a several nice ARM's (with original box / mags / access.) going for 2,800.00 and they still didn't sell right away.

It a tougher market now.
