I happened to be talking to Rex at Vector just yesterday and I had a number of questions to ask him. One of which was the 32 round mags that his web site says are IMI but the ones cookie saw at the creek were not marked. At that point Rex mentioned the star marked 32 round mags. I was quite surprised by that and told him that I had never heard of such a thing. He said that he thought they had been issues at some point to Israeli special forces. Anyway, he couldn't confirm for sure if they still had the 32's with the star and he said he'd check and get back to me. I was hoping to hear from him today but no word yet. If he has some, my intention was to get a few and try them out so I could report on the results to the members before everyone jumped on them.
We didn't talk about 25 round magazines and I don't really know what your second question is xm15e2s. Are you asking if the unmarked ones are really IMI? If that's the question, then here's my best guess: no, but possibly yes. It depends what you mean by "really IMI". What we typically refer to as the real IMI mags are the heavy duty mags with the thick folded seam on the back of the mag. Those seem to always be marked with a star. There are a lot of unmarked mags around that are what I consider the newer design with a smooth seam on the front or the back. We've always considered them after market and in general they don't work as well as the real mags, although some of them work very well. However, after my discussion with Rex yesterday, I'm beginning to wonder if at some point IMI might have quit making their own mags because the demand was so low and they may have been contracting out with Mec-Gar or others to produce some of the newer style (flat seam) mags that IMI would sell. That's my conjecture at this point and I'm trying to track down sources that could lend some insight. So it may be possible that there are some unmarked mags that were sold by IMI, but if they were, they weren't the old reliable design like the originals. I think the bottom line is still that the "real" IMI mags with the star are still the most reliable - and thus worth a little more.
I'll be posting more info when it's available.
