I have my Uzi Carbine registered as a short barreled rifle on a Form 1. The hardest part seems to be actually finding the 10" barrel that will fit. I ordered from a 10" barrel from Bushmaster and it took them a week to tell me they don't have the 10" barrels in stock.

Does anyone have a source for 10" barrels the will fit a semi-carbine. Or should I just take a saw to a 16 incher?

Thanks again for your help!

I do not know if this will help, but it will at least be a start.

I got mine (2) from Olympic Arms (the AR people) back in '89. They are cut at the rear to fit the ring at the feed ramp, and at the band just behind the flane to fit the semi trunnion bore.

I do not know if they still sell the barrel, all you can do is call.

You can get the SMG barrels for maybe $30 from Tapco, but you need somebody with a lathe to cut the barrel down to size. I saved my 16" IMI barrel for value (has last 3 digit of serial # at end of barrel from IMI/Action Arms). The OLY barrels I got are 6 groove RH twist (1x10), and not chrome. Never had any problem as far as function, had to set barrels back 12 thousandths to correct headspace, would blow cases/swell bases. Just cut the rear of the band to set barrel deeper into the gun.

Now that you have a registered short barrel rifle, you can make the length any size you wish. However, if you make it shorter than 10 inches, you may have a problem putting a bayonet on it because they just fit the 10.1 inch barrel and if it is shorter, well, no fit.

I stock 10.1 inch barrels for the SMG, but it has a different style chamber end than the Semi-Auto barrel. I also stock 16 and 18 inch barrels for the Semi-Auto. I haven't needed a source for a 10.1 inch barrel for the Semi-Auto.

If it were me doing this. I would simply cut off the Semi Barrel to the desired length. Might want to even have it done at a machine shop. Anyway, when cut off, file it smooth, then chamfer the outside edge and also slightly chamfer the inside to remove any burrs from the rifling. Polish the end with 800 grit emery cloth to a nice smooth shine. Touch up the blueing or parkerizing to restore the cosmetic appearance and ENJOY!

Or, if you wish, my shop will make what you need for $125.00 plus shipping costs. Will ship second day after receipt of payment. Let me know if I can help....

Short barrel for semi spec trunnion

I have a registered IMI conversion that still has a semi spec trunnion.
If you get a SMG barrel, it will need to be turned down in multiple locations not just the breech end by the restrictor ring. The area behind the barrel flange will also need to be turned down. I've had to grind the the other side of the flange area too.
I have a BM chrome lined barrel that just drops right in that I really like.
Since you mention they don't have them anymore, I would recommend calling Vector. They can provide you with a short barrel that will work in a Semi.
Also try rpbusa , they had barrels that would drop right in but I think they also had MAC10 threads on them. I can't remember if they had them without threads. I don't see it listed on their site but you may want to call them.

Uzi barrels again

I didn't think about it before but I have a bunch of uzi barrels. If you're interested, I can sell you one CHEAP - I'm thinking around $30 shipped. Let me know if you are and I'll take some pics.

Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions. I did buy a 10" barrel from Numrich. I may not get it for a while as they appear to be burried in snow. I will report back once I receive it a run a few rounds through it.

Received my 10" barrel from Numrich. Looks good and fits my Model A receiver. I am going to shoot it on Thursday and will report back then.

I have a .41AE barrel I am going to sell for $50. I'll post it up on the EE in a bit. I wanted SMG profile, but the guy selling didn't know the diff, so I need to dump it.

I shot my UZI with the new 10" barrel today. Function was flawless. Accuracy is not as good as with the 16" barrel. Nothing terrible, but the group is noticeably larger at 25 yards.

Some of the loss of accuracy may be attributable to the fit of the barrel. The 16" barrel fits snugly and requires a little push to seat the barrel in the reciever. The 10", on the other hand, just drops right in with no effort. Once the nut is tightened, there is no noticeable play with the 10 incher, but there proablly is some wiggle room.

The 10" barrel does not have a wider "band" between the chamber and the seating ridge (or whatever you call it) on the muzzel end. The 16" barrel has such a band. I am thinking of making a band with some heat resistant tape to see if I can get a tighter fit. All in all, I am happy with the new barrel.

Headspace

Is there a way to tell that my UZI is safe to fire when I installed or use another barrrel? In my H&k I bought a headspace and a feeler gauge to make sure that the bolt seated properly. How do I do that with my UZI?

Respectfully,

You'll know if you have a problem. The 2 Olympic barrels I bought, I kept having occasional bulged cases, blown out cases. Would not happen with the IMI 16" barrel. I would go to size the cases and they were difficult to size, you could see a "ring" of smeared brass just above the extractor groove.

I got adventurious and had the barrel flange cut about .010" to set the barel deeper into the gun. Now when a empty case is chambered, barrel installed without the barrel nut, I have a small measureable gap between flange and trunnion, push barrel in and you can see bolt move slightly rearward.....case is now supported at base and mouth............No more blowouts, no more swelled brass, sizes as if it came out of a handgun. Brass been lasting a whole lot longer. Did this in '93.
