Greetings all,

I recently bought a New Century Galil after some research and sad to say, i'm having all sorts of problems. After searching, I found this site and I hope you can help. I have a call into Century, but have yet to talk to a real person.

Here's the background:

Rifle is a new 18" BBL Golani purchased NIB feorm a Dealer at the Missoula Gun Show Aug 10. I've owned a Galil previously - and IMI in the early 80s, so expected one of the finest service rifles made.

I made a careful inspection of the rifle, and was impressed on the over all quality of the build, at least appearance wise. I spoke to everal owners who all had no issues with the Century Golani. I had preciously owned a Century CETME that required all sorts of work, but figured that not even the semi-trained monkeys at CAI culd mess up an AK derived rifle.

Off to the range. I loaded up some new Winchester 55gn FMJBT (basically M193) which is the standard 223 test round I use foir 223 rifles. Almosr every single round from the 35 round mag was a failure to eject ending in some sort of stove pipe. The next round in the magazine was often scarred by the bolt. I first assumed a faulty magazine, so I rebuilt magazine number 2 (the nasty one). I carefully cleaned the rifle, and lubed well.

Same problem. The last 4 or 5 rounds fire just fine, whioch lead me to the conclusion that the bolt is dragging on the rounds in the mag. In an AK this is usually a sign of a partially blocked or undersized gas port. The bolt is definitely not coming back far enough, and empties don't appear to be hitting the ejector with enough force to throw them clear.

I tried to remove the front sight block to gauge the port size, but it appears that the front sight is a serious press fit on the barrel. I removed the two roll pins and could not free the sight with a brass punch and hammer.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thank, Tod

(New here, but not a noob)

Hey Tod Welcome to the forum.Sorry to hear about your Century build giving ya problems. We've heard good and bad reviews about Century's Galil builds,50-50 you're going to get a great rifle or a dud.To remove the gas block you are more than likely going to have to press it off to check the gas port size(unless you have Popeye forearms)Before I went to all that trouble ,I would contact Century and send it back for repair or replacement. If you do get the gas block off,the port should be at least 1.8mm.Some guys have went a little bigger with good results.

Thanks. I hope to hear from Century tomorrow. I really want to have this gun work. I tested for accuracy and had no problem shoot 10 rounds into 2 inches at 100 yards with irons of a rest. That puts it way ahead of any AK. The sights are also dead on, and since I haven't found a Galil front sight tool, that a goog thing.

Well, I bored out the gas port using a long 1/16 drill (thanks Ace hardware), but I am still getting stove pipes. When extraction/ejection works, iot tosses brass about 20-30 feet. The only conclusion I can rach is a bad extractor. Looks like it's going back to century. They already gave me an RMA.

Ship it,I'm sure they will make it right. They really need to improve their quality control. The Galil is known for very violent ejection of the brass. It will eject it usually at the 2:00 position around 30 ft. or so.Leaves a nice indention in the middle of the casing also.

Thanks,

This problem is really obvious if you try and fire a loaded magazine. I hate giving up, but I don't have an extra extractor or extrcator spring to try. I just hope it doesn't take months to get this corrected.

GunTech,

Your story is a common one.

Some guys will buy a Century Galil knowing that there is a 50/50 chance that they will have to send it somewhere to basically be rebuilt and refinished. Gone over by a competent gunsmith.

Generally, most of the parts are useable, but, the smithing isn't up to snuff with the Century folks a lot of the time.

Some guys basically view Century Galils as a complete parts kit.

I think that when you are done with all the running around involved, you will have learned some good things and you will have a rifle with which you will be happy.

Its a shame that Century is asleep at the wheel concerning rifles that leave its doors with major issues. The price for a complete rifle is an awesome deal,IF you luck out and recieve one that functions properly.I'm planning on adding one to the collection.Hopefully ,I won't crap out get a dud.

I know what you are saying, but, I don't think they are asleep at the wheel.

I think that this is Century's business model. They have been in business for a long time, so, they must be making money doing things this way.

IOW, it's working for them.

Sucks for us. :)

Thanks all,

The folks at Century were pretty good about getting me set up with an RMA, and it really felt like they have done this before. My last Century rifle was a CETME that couldn't be cocked due to manufacturing errors. They must not test anything they ship, becise my problem was immediately notice.

s noted, it does gall me somewhat paying $925 for a rifle which only jams in 25-30 rounds out pf every 35.

Anyone know how to check for proper extractor spring tension and engagement? Is it worth having an extra extractor and spring in you backup kit? (I see Sarco has parts)

I'll post a report when I get the rifle back from cia.

Galil back from Century

I had the same problems with ejection and feeding, but I had several different mags to try new and used and sent my Galil back to Century. Had to pay for shipping and insurance $30. They said it was headspace problem and changed bolts and sent it back and it functions fine now.

That's good news. You must live closer to Vermont than I. It's going to take a week just to get there from Montana. I think I am going to order some spare parts: Extractor and spring for example.

Spare parts

I went ahead and ordered an extra kit just for spare parts. If I need extra cash I can just sell some spare parts. Got mine from MGS cause it had a magazine with it.

I posted a thread about this somewhere else, but since you're having the problem I'm repeating it here. I'm having the same problem with my ""new"" Galil from Century. Since others are too, I'll be calling them tomorrow and arranging to send it back. Looks good but not so useful as a social equalizer if it won't fire, eh? Incidentally, does anyone know about any sort of Pic-Rail optical mount that is specifically designed for this piece? Thanks again... unhappy in Central WA
