Greetings all,
I recently bought a New Century Galil after some research and sad to say, i'm having all sorts of problems. After searching, I found this site and I hope you can help. I have a call into Century, but have yet to talk to a real person.
Here's the background:
Rifle is a new 18" BBL Golani purchased NIB feorm a Dealer at the Missoula Gun Show Aug 10. I've owned a Galil previously - and IMI in the early 80s, so expected one of the finest service rifles made.
I made a careful inspection of the rifle, and was impressed on the over all quality of the build, at least appearance wise. I spoke to everal owners who all had no issues with the Century Golani. I had preciously owned a Century CETME that required all sorts of work, but figured that not even the semi-trained monkeys at CAI culd mess up an AK derived rifle.
Off to the range. I loaded up some new Winchester 55gn FMJBT (basically M193) which is the standard 223 test round I use foir 223 rifles. Almosr every single round from the 35 round mag was a failure to eject ending in some sort of stove pipe. The next round in the magazine was often scarred by the bolt. I first assumed a faulty magazine, so I rebuilt magazine number 2 (the nasty one). I carefully cleaned the rifle, and lubed well.
Same problem. The last 4 or 5 rounds fire just fine, whioch lead me to the conclusion that the bolt is dragging on the rounds in the mag. In an AK this is usually a sign of a partially blocked or undersized gas port. The bolt is definitely not coming back far enough, and empties don't appear to be hitting the ejector with enough force to throw them clear.
I tried to remove the front sight block to gauge the port size, but it appears that the front sight is a serious press fit on the barrel. I removed the two roll pins and could not free the sight with a brass punch and hammer.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thank, Tod
