“I will add that one of the things I am doing to avoid MG-status is making the upper a open bolt design, but only when the lower is attached.
Without a M10 lower attached, the upper will not, under any circumstances, fire a round.
Attaching anything else to the upper, other than a M10 lower, will only result in the upper jamming or feeding incorrectly.
So, I guess you can call it a closed-bolt, open bolt system? =)“

Yes.
There are parts that I make that must be used in the lower for the upper to fire a cartridge.
These parts have zero effect on the use of any other upper, whether factory mac uppers or any of the aftermarket uppers I've seen.
It requires the shooter to pull the trigger in order for the cartridge to fire. The upper cannot runaway or accidently fire unless the trigger is intentionally pulled.
