Ok, so this is just a continuation of a previous thread that I started:

http://www.uzitalk.com/forums/showt...for-Galil-receiver&highlight=galil+blueprints

I was having trouble remembering and finding the thread in question due to an outdated name, so here we are.

Update - I got my first prototype in steel today. There are some dimensional issues which I will get resolved as soon as possible, but just holding it and seeing the machining on it was an awesome feeling.

Here below are some pictures. Some side-to-side to an original receiver. As mentioned there are some machining issues, but we're in the ballpark and the rest can be addressed pretty easily.

And before anyone asks, no, I can't use this trunnion to build a rifle. The dimensional issues affect the gas tube and bolt movement, so this is officially a paperweight.

I can hardly wait to see this thing come to life.
I sure am glad you're proceeding on this.
Do keep us posted, on this stamped receiver Galil.
(you don't need to put the reason in the edit/update, it'll go thru without it)

As I recall, there was an old bearded retired IDF Colonel Katcha who had a stamped underfolder AK/Galil hybrid. He had an IDF Armorer make it for him. It was on an episode of Tales of the gun. It would make a really interesting build. I’ll see if I can locate the photos.

Can someone confirm it's a stamp receiver? The back of the receiver tells me it's milled because of the angle. All stamped underfolders receivers I've seen are squared not angled.

The logical part of me would like to say that duh, obviously it would be stamped as to achieve the savings in weight they aimed for. BUT, you're obviously much more observant than I as it is indeed a milled receiver, evidenced from the included screenshot clearly showing the lightening cut.

My question now is, where did the claimed weight savings come from then? The stock?

LOL that's funny! Well at least I'm going in the right direction. A stamped Galil would also have a cool factor and will be considered in my future builds.

"A one of a kind answer to the Galils weight problem".....Yeah not that one....

Milled receiver and galil front end and add a Russian steel folder....= A one of a kind heavier rifle.

Do these guys research this stuff or talk outta their ass.

Wow! Would ya' look at that. Seen that video before, and I just "assumed" it was stamped, like the commentator said.
The good Colonel didn't say it was though.
It's a type 2 milled AK-47 receiver, very good eyes there, whoever picked up on that!!

Remember guys, that show is super old. Like Mail-Call 1995 old.

Its also really hard to have a gun in Israel. Its quite impressive the "Colonel" got permission to keep a rifle, let alone mix and mash parts between it and a AK47.

Also, I do not believe the receiver is a Russian type-2, but possibly a milled Type-56. The angle is the same on my milled MAK-90 conversion.

Thanks Seth for pointing that out. Big question is assuming it is indeed a type 56 milled receiver, why would he choose that for his hybrid when type 2/3 receivers are more readily available? What Arab neighbors got supplied by China?

The good Colonel did say himself that it was Russian, maybe he was wrong, but....I believe he probably knows what he's got. He never did say it was stamped either, only the "commentator" said that.
Still, you could be right Seth.

This is the revised version for a second prototype that I've ordered. We've decided to fill the gap at the bottom so the trunnion sits flush. Also cut away sections where possible to lighten it and with Jeff's help corrected the dimensional issues we had.
