I've heard you should always clean the bore of lead after shooting 22 rf and before shooting .223

Is this true?

Does the barrel lead up that much when shooting 22rf, to make shooting .223 right after it unsafe?

I have'nt had any leading issues with mine, though I do use the copper plated .22 ammo, don't know if that helps or not.
What you should clean prior to switching back to 5.56 is the chamber, quite a bit of carbon will build up around the "neck" of the chamber insert, which could "possibly" cause a head space issue.
I always clean the whole gun before switching back to 5.56, because the .22 stuff will get it filthy as hell. You'll have it apart anyway, so mind as well clean it.

Not unsafe.....

Just very inaccurate. Shoot a bunch of .22 rimfire and switch back to .223 and you will be making a lot of noise, but not hitting much. The chamber gets pretty dirty from shooting .22 rimfire as well due to the chamber adapter not being a perfect seal. This allows lead residue, carbon fouling, and unburned powder to stick to the chamber walls which can lead to stuck cases. Also, leading of the gas port can cause erratic operation if this isn't cleaned occasionally as well.

It takes a lot of .22 rimfire to cause excessive leading or gas port issues, but stuck cases from a dirty chamber can happen in as few as 500 rounds. Believe me.....500 rounds goes pretty quick in the conversion kit. Scrubbing the chamber is more important than the bore for most plinking.

Just my experience. YMMV

Leading of the bore is common with most 22 rimfire ammo.

It would be very wise to clean your bore before switching back to .223. Any restriction from leading can/will cause a high pressure condition, something you don't want in an already high pressure cartridge like .223.

Even running a bore brush and a couple of patches will help reduce the chance of a restricted bore.

What do y'all use to scrub the bore of lead?

CLP, bronze brush, and elbow grease:D

Really bad jobs require something like outers bore foam. Let it work and then scrub with a bronze brush. Hoppes elite works pretty well too.
