Has anyone on the forum stored any NFA items in a safety deposit box?

Specifically, I am looking to store machineguns while I am stationed in Korea for 2 years.

Any recommendations for a bank in central TX?

FWIW, the bank we use does allow the storage of firearms, but I was told by the Assistant Manager that she had personally had moisture damage to some stuff she put in a Safety Deposit Box at that bank.
Do you know any Dealers in your area that have the space to store them for you? They can keep an eye on them for rust (not possible at a Bank), have dehumidifiers, and would probably be cheaper.

Another place would be the Provost Marshall's Office where you are stationed now.

Dip them in grease and seal in plastic

The place your living right now can’t store them?

The Current base I am at won't allow me to store NFA items in the arms room. I wanted to transfer them to my home of record (TX) and store them but with the government shut down I don't think I can take them across the country. I think I will need to store them in Florida where I am currently at and come back after I return and pick them up. I will look into safe deposit boxes in the local area tomorrow.

The grease Idea sounds good.

My shop uses a local Hometown Bank for all of its business I have 2 file drawer sized, safe deposit boxes, and currently have probably 60 customer silencers as well as several FA recievers in them.... we take the cans out of the box and put them inside of cheap walmart socks, for padding, and then inside of clear plastic bags that we got at Uline with an index card with a customer's name, make and model.... For mg receivers awaiting the F4, we spray them down with WD-40 and seal them in a Ziploc bag and then inside of a padded USPS envelope with the customer's name.
I took Komododj with me one day, we picked up his M11, and the lady at the bank wanted me to sign a couple papers... So, he had to wait in the bank lobby with the M11 in a padded envelope, on his lap....im sure he was sweatting bullets...... I snapped a picture and texted it to all of our friends

Froglube paste is better than grease for rust prevention. It’s the best of all for that purpose.

I would also consider Zerust VCI Gun Storage Protection Bags.

You can get a 3pk of self-sealing zip bags for about $5. They supposedly help protect for up to 5 years.

They also have other products for firearms including a rust inhibiting oil and vapor capsules.

Should be aware that thick, copious coatings with grease or oil probably would make such bags ineffective. Thin layers of chemically inert oils are probably fine.

What I did with mine (for the 15 months I was in Iraq) was to move my whole household (gun safes and all) into a storage unit, had the monthly bill put on auto pay and forgot about them.

Like the guy in Bill in va’s post I left a note inside the unit stating to contact my dad in case of non payment/burglary/theft.

My renters insurance transferred to the storage unit (check with your insurance carrier if you have renters insurance to make sure) so most of my trash would be covered in case of loss.

All my guns were cleaned and well oiled then put in silicone impregnated gun socks before storage (no plastic bags) but seeing is how you’re in Florida extra protection reference corrosion seems prudent.

Even with the shut down, on Subguns guys have said they have gotten their 5320.2's back. I would fax them into the nfa branch with an explanation about your situation and they will usually expidite them.

By a safe and lock them inside. Store where you can and retrieve them when you return. That easy as long as no one else has the combo.

Corrosion X might be better long term option than WD-40. Or Boeing T-9 spray wax.

This seems like the way to go. In my area, the big safe deposit box storage drawers are extremely expensive and few banks have them.

Best of luck.

MHO, YMMV, etc.

Thanks, for the suggestions. I covered them in frog lube and am leaving them with a relative in Florida (Locked in a case that only I have the key to).
