I may be picking up a Springfield Armory Galil, my first IMI Galil. It's a model 392, there's no "S" after the model number, yet it is configured like a Sporter: thumbhole stock, no bayo lug, nor a flashider. Is this a 1/7 or 1/12 barrel? I thought all 392's would be 1/12, but I can't find any records on a SA 392 and I would think that by the time the SA's were being imported that IMI fully went over to 1/7 barrels. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can guess using Action Arms as a guide since these are AA rifles. AA 392 have 1/12 while AA 392S has 1/7. Guessing it would be 1/12 since it doesn't have the "S". Anyone else?

Blazin,
Springfield Armory did not have a 392 model, but a 710 (see description below), unless they took a 392 and put their name on it, since they were the sole importer after ActionArms went out of business.

Is the serial number start with a "210" or a "GS"

Where is the name of Springfield Armory on the receiver?

Either way; it is a 1-7" twist.

GS 710-S - 5.56mm "ARM Sporter", 16" barrel, 1-7" twist, wood thumb-hole stock, wood ARM hand guard, no carrying handle, no night sights. Serial # in GS2100xxx range. (1 rifle reported) There is also a GS 710 rifle reported without the S stamped after the model number and without the GS Serial # prefix. Serial # in 210020x.

Yeah, I wish I had easy access to the gun because it does seem to be an oddity. Serial # is 2095XXX without any GS and the Springfield Armory name is in the SA usual place: left side of receiver, under (and parallel to) the dustcover. I wonder if there's an S after the model # underneath the thumbhole stock...

Drumroll please....the gun is a 1/12, and it does not have an S after 392. I just picked it up and it is NIB, absolutely covered in cosmoline.

You never really know what you're going to get with an Israeli made Galil. The 8 that I have owned all had an assortment of oddball features. Many things that people say are unlikely could very well be true and original.

Personally, I would have guessed 1-7.

I have a Springfield and mine is a 1-7, but mine is a model 710 ARM. I restored mine back to its original glory after the assault weapons ban expired. I installed a US made piston, pistol grip, hammer, trigger, & sear. And then I installed the original folding stock, bipod, night sights, carry handle, and flash hider that actually came with the rifle when I bought it back in '91. Mine came with the thumbhole stock installed but I paid a few bucks extra to get the "accurizing kit" which included the original items (uninstalled). They sat in storage until it I was able to legally install them. I had to have a piece made that I attached to the stubs on the bottom of the gas block (where the original bipod mounts were ground off) to attach the biod. But it looks great and you cannot even notice that this work was done until you look very close.

These are great Galils. And now that they can legally be restored they are an awesome way to get ahold of an original IMI Galil. I paid $700 for mine brand new back in '91. I'm so glad I got it. I held onto it when at times I did not know why. Back in the dark years of the AW ban it seemed impossible that it would ever be legal to restore it to its original configuration.

My plans are similar to yours. I wanted an IMI AR configuration Galil, and I really wanted an unfired one. I already have a US trigger kit, piston and pistol grip on order. :heavy

Anyways the thing was for sale online for quite some time. I hemmed and hawed about it and after the State of the Union address I decided it's now or never. Hey, look it's still online, and no, I didn't pay that much for it: http://www.davisguns.com/browse.cfm/springfield-galil-223rem/6,16337.html

I got all the cosmo off of it today and it is incredible, truly unfired. It's so cool looking at an unfired Galil bolt. Won't be like that for long...

I'm stoked.
