Why is the SP5K allowed to be imported? What is difference between this gun and SP89? I had SP 89 but sold it years ago.

Thanks

Kevin

Other than the receiver pin below the rear sight which precludes the use of an mp5k bolt carrier (unless carrier is modified by machining the top to flatted the carrier) and a different shelf on the receiver and thus trigger housing mating surface - its the same. Both parts mentioned above are available at hkparts.net with full compatibility with other necessary components. IMO the SP5K is a nice inroad into new factory roller locked pistols which may open the door to other pistols. One can argue (for cost reasons) to get a clone instead I am biased and like the factory HK components for their quality

forgot to add I think its allowed for importation because its a pistol I am sure there was a lot of ATF scrutiny also I read that the German govt classified it as a sporting firearm not paramilitary

I think...

Op, I believe the reason for no import on the SP89 is on the German side, not the US side. Germany has gotten increasingly anti weapons of war export focused in recent years - the changes HK made (BCG, dimples) are supposed to make it impossible (or hard) to turn the gun to F/A. If you want a common sense answer, I don't have one - it's the government...

CV - IMO - I think they have but it has been reincarnated in a more compliant easier to export form to comply with German export laws and US import nuances (topics I know nothing about). I have compared the two side by each and the differences are minor.
BTW I looked up Alder Brook it looks really nice and remote from the info on their web site thanks. Regards, PeterNNH

The SP89 was also banned "by name"......and sometimes the change in nomenclature is enough to have something similar imported again....

Well guys, I took the plunge and picked up an SP5K today. Will let you know how it shoots when I go. Expensive but original HK.
