So who is offering QPQ/Melonite finishes for tranferables these days?

I have a transferable Mac11. It's started to have surface rust issues on the lower. I'd like to send it out to be refinished in a tougher, more rust resistant finish such as a true QPQ/"melonite" finish with a true black hue(want it to match my Lage Max11k upper).

I know Practical Solutions offers repark. services but did not see any QPQ options offered...

So who offers a true QPQ black finish for transferables?

You'd be taking a very big risk in doing this if you could find anyone who would even try it, as the high-heat of the process will most likely warp your transferable. Better to re-park then cerakote it.

That was my other concern...

So that takes NiB off the table due to the heat treat. I assume Robar's NP coatings have a heat treat just like NiB does.

Guess a re-park and Cerakote it is. Stupid sheet metal...

You could nickel plate it.
Actually looks kinda like stainless steel if the gun is lightly blasted first.
Just sayin'

Not sure about the temperature difference between melonite and NiB/NP3, but I believe someone here has a matching NP3'd m11/9 and Uzi. So that should be doable.

IIRC the smith you send it to does not necessarily need to be an SOT, a regular FFL can have it in his possession for the purpose of work or repairs. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

There are more out there than that.

I talked to them a while back and they said it wasn't a big deal. I didn't have it done because of all the new crap coming out.

Mismatched parts wouldn't be fabulous!! :sogay

Website seems to say that he only does Micro Slick(made by Cerakote iirc) and then the usual Cerakote coatings. Gun would still need to be blasted and re-parked for best Cerakote adhesion. Thanks for the suggestion though; had never heard of them.

Well, I'll have to contact Robar then since NP3+ was definitely a thought of mine way before I needed to do something about rusting. I might hit it with some acid on the problem spots, degrease it, and Cerakote it at work to get me by(depending what robar says about doing it and their lead time).

I'd bet I could get a black oxide type 4 finish done and it'd be more corrosion resistant than a straight parkerized finish. Hot black oxide is around 290F iirc and there is such thing as mid temp black oxide. Robar does black oxide too so it's looking more and more like they'll be my go to.

You are correct about the FFL part. When I asked, I meant it as a "who will touch these". Bad wording on my part.

I don't think 290°F would come even close to harming your gun. When parts are welded, they get much hotter than that, and a lot (but, admittedly not all) parts reach hotter temps when firing, esp Full Auto.
