Semiauto UZI - Serious tool or a Range Toy?

Everything old is new again. Started with the resurgence of the good ol' 9mm, the US military is getting a new 9mm sub-gun for the first time in generations in the form of the B&T APC9K, and the pistol caliber carbine is enjoying a renaissance, being touted as the just-right Goldilocks weapon for home defense! I already voted "serious tool" ages ago. I'm gonna hafta second my original opinion based on the latest trends.

I'd say it fills both roles just fine, it's a well proven design that you should never have to worry about busting on you. Nowadays you can buy 9mm and mags pretty cheap, so you won't have to worry about wasting money when you're at the range with it. And for SHTF, yeah there's better options, but I certainly wouldn't mind having a semi auto uzi as my only resort to a weapon, it's not a tiny pea shooter, it can get the job done quite well.
Though honestly, I wouldn't use such a common ammo for an SHTF apocalypse situation, I would personally carry something with an "uncommon" ammo. Not uncommon to where you won't find it anywhere if you needed to look, but just to a point where not EVERYONE is trying to grab that ammo too. Like 9x18 or .300 Savage, yeah you're not gonna find a bunch of other people using it, but at least you'll almost always get to grab all of it for yourself when you find it in a store or something; because really, who's gonna be carrying something that uses that ammo? Because it seems like everyone else is set on only using 9mm and .223 no matter what
But I digress, you do you, either choice would be perfectly fine, it fills both roles perfectly fine

Range toy?

Short bio, I'll be 70 in a couple of months. Worked as a Paramedic in a big city and for the last 35 years as an ER nurse. I've seen and helped treat many GSW over the years and can personally attest to a lot of the "facts" that are fables and fables that are facts. Regarding gunshot wound effects on human beings: I've seen .22 lr wounds to the chest kill in minutes and a .22 to a child's brain seemingly have no initial effect. I've seen a shotgun in the mouth take off more than half a face and the guy ask us for a cigarette. I could give many more examples with different calibers but for brevity's sake I won't. Shot placement is one key we must rely upon but it doesn't always work the way we expect.

As to the lovely UZI, I adore mine. The lines of the piece just feel right. Cleaning it is a pleasure like bathing a beautiful woman it's never a chore. But .. to me (more and more every day) weight to firepower ratio is very important. A 9mm may penetrate a door frame when that is needed or it may not. My UZI is really for fun at the range. My first choice for defense, home and otherwise is an AK pistol with a red dot sight. I may not be able to hear anything after the dust settles but I will be around to learn to sign.

This is a man that was living in a SHTF type of situation. It is not a definitive answer to SHTF questions but it does lend some insight.

In there he suggests having a pistol caliber carbine, and a suppressor if you can. I think any firearm can be a Serious tool. It all depends how you use it.

As he states in there, 99% of the time a pistol is what you will be relying on. That being said, when needing a long arm, having an UZI with a 16" bbl would not be my first choice (probably my AMD-65), but I can see some practical uses for a SBR 9mm with good sub-gun ammo or even a 9mm carbine with a suppressor. They are controllable, hi-cap weapons, that can get the job done within range.

They are only toys if you make them such IMO

I am using mine as a house gun only,the 16" barrel increases the 9mm to the power of a 357 in a 4" barrel according to what I have read and it reduces the flash to almost nothing,other than that out side I would want a long gun in at least 7.62x39 cal. :beer

Ok, but some people use them in the night by wearing night sight goggles, and of course accuracy is not the best, but it works fine. I love separate thing which should be separated. If someone wants to add night vision scope to the weapon, well then I think he should buy a top-notch rifle for that purposes.

A semi auto Uzi is a formidable weapon. A SBR Uzi is a formidable very maneuverable weapon. Clear a room with a 16" AR or AK and then do it with a SBR Uzi and you'll understand.

I understand the maneuverability of the SBR being ideal in unknown circumstances, but a 16” barrel on an Uzi or MAC still results in a fairly maneuverable weapon - especially in your own home, where you are familiar with every corner. And I vastly prefer the foregrip ‘out’ a bit, rather than tucked in by the bolt housing. Makes the thing more stable.

AR & AK are generally the wrong caliber/load for that circumstance, as the average home invader is not wearing body armor.

The Uzi or Mini Uzi isn’t my first choice in a home defense.

A good 12ga pump with an 18” barrel and a good 9mm hi cap pistol as backup.
The rack of a 12ga will put the fear of god in anyone that is sane and not out of their mind on drugs.
2 double 00s and a slug in order. It will put holes through the interior walls without killing the neighbors next door.

Outdoors I’ll take a AR. 9mm is no match against a 223. It is what our troops and LEO use. So in a pinch you could scrounge ammo and parts.

That being said, the Koreans used UZIs to defend their stores during the King riots in LA. But no one was shooting back at them with 223 or 308.

I just ordered/bought a McKay Complete/Welded and completed UZI semi-auto Receiver. It is supposed to be one of the best recievers you can buy. (that is, according to my reseach and what I have heard and read!) I can only hope that this is to be true. Now that I have this reciever, that is ready for a complete UZI drop in Semi-auto drop in kit, (I now have learned from YOU-TUBE.) that most of the Kits that are avaiable now (from RTG, Etc.) are SMG Sub deactivated Machine Gun kits that fire from the open bolt! I dont want that! I don't want an UZI parts kit, that I have to work on to convert it to work as a Semi-Auto parts kit! Now, here is my question, ......... Do you know of anyone who sells an UZI parts kit that contains a Semi-Auto bolt, that fires from the closed bolt? A parts kit that contains a CLOSED bolt semi-auto Bolt and sear, and a 2 position Grip, (with only SAFE and FIRE) and/or a 16 inch barrel? Any help or Suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

I have never seen a plug and play “kit” like you are wanting. An Uzi build is gona require a bit of leg work, unless you send it to someone and just say “build it and send me the bill”.

Since you have a McKay receiver, go pick up a McKay semi-auto bolt assy. Prob good idea to do it ASAP as the word on the ol intro-webs says they will not be making anymore.

Sounds like you are wanting to buy a semi auto grip assy vs buying a semi auto sear and modifying a full-auto grip assy from a kit. Might check US barrel shrouds. I know they use to carry semi-auto grip assemblies but no idea now days.

You will also need a semi auto barrel, and prob a Uzi SMG parts kit (Unless you want to source the smalls separately). What sucks is you won’t be using alot of the kit but you need all the small parts, top cover assy, hand guards, buttstock and so on.

32 Rounds ready in a small "Bug Out Bag" size. How can you beat that? Chambered in readily available in 45 ACP or 9mm how could it be more versatile? Very reliable platform. If concealment is NOT needed, this would most definitely go in my bug out bag.
