The rear plate on my m11/9 FA blew off in my face yesterday. A rod blew out the back as well. I missed losing an eye by a centimeter. Have any of you been through this and is there anything I should be concerned about with the repair?

What ammo were you using?

Have it TIG welded and use lighter loaded ammo.

Hope you were wearing glasses.

Since the M11/9 is folded and welded at the rear, I'd also like to see the photo. :wtf

I had the welds on the backing plate on my full auto Vector Uzi break... TWICE, and yes, it's a separate part from the receiver. I never used hot loads or shot any .45acp thru the gun and I'm happy I always used a solid polymer stock. Uzi back plate photo

I'm delighted to be using a "solid" Lage stock on my M11/9 today just in case. No crappy wire form stock will fold up on me while shooting or prevent the recoil assembly from punching a hole in my eye.

M60Joe does very nice work. Sorry about that and I'm glad you're ok! Ditto on the wearing glasses part!

Not a big deal as having seen it happen twice. One was a deranged buffer and the other was +p+ ammo. Just call around to see who has TIG and would weld it. Time to give the old girl a new park job afterwards.

Getting Fixed

C & S Metal Wekes is going to do the welding and the finishing. They tell me this happens frequently and the reinforcing they will do will make the frame far more durable than when new. It is great having people like them around.

I was wearing glasses. Thanks for the concern.

I have had the weld break on mine twice. I was fortunate that both times I realized it before anything came flying out. This was also before I got the MAX-11. Both times I was using Winchester white box, and the first time was the second day I had the gun, before I knew your suposed to use a buffer.

Been there, done that.

I took delivery of my M 11/9 last summer and had the 20.20 back in time to take it with me to Ohio for Bulletfest. I had 2000 + rounds of 9mm ammo and was really looking foreward to running the new buzz gun.

Well I think I might have gone through 300 rounds or so before the gun started really acting up. I looked down and saw the rear plate blown completely loose on one side and sticking off at a crazy angle. I was running a Mac Jack, didn't realize I still needed a soft buffer. That was my dumbass mistake. It pretty much sucked having to stow that one away for the weekend.

I got the gun home and took it up to a local welding shop where they fixed me up again. I shot the whole lower with a coat of black satin spray paint.......Hell, looks good enough for me and it runs great with the MAX 11 upper.

I am new to the FA world and my entry is a Mac 11/9. I just took it out for a run for the first time last night and my results were mixed. I'll be reading and posting a lot of quetions trying to get up to speed so please excuse the learning curve.

I've heard mention in this thread about a "buffer". There is of course the (looks like rubber) buffer that came on the bolt assembly. Do you all mean that I need to get an after market one?

Welcome Sinsaba and congrats on the M11/9! Your firearms experience will take on a whole new direction and you will find that there will always be something to tinker with.
The buffer should be installed at the rear of the receiver to cushion the impact of the bolt. The buffers take alot of abuse and should be periodically replaced to protect the bolt and receiver from metal to metal contact. Buffers are available from many sources or you can cut your own.

Welcome!
The buffer actually goes between the bolt and recoil/ejector rod plate on your bolt assembly as you've noted. If your gun was an unfired NIB example, the buffer needs to be changed right away! BM11/9 buffers wear at a high rate and the neoprene buffers last longer than the rubber and are the preferred choice among most owners.

Factory Zytel magazines can be problematic. I'd mark each individual magazine to isolate any mag related issues you may be experiencing.

Ammo is another area that can make a huge difference in the way your gun runs. UMC is typically considered underpowered although some owners swear by the stuff. Conversely, you don't want to use really hot ammo.

If you'll post specific information on what type of magazines and ammo you're using, we'll try to help. Any malfunctions should also be detailed to better help you get your new toy running correctly.

If the mac failure was due to excessivly hot ammo you probably would have experienced a split bbl . I have had a number of mac bbls expand making it almost impossible to get the bolt out of the upper
