I think he is talking about the 1989 import ban on non-sporting firearms. Why we could get regular type 56 AKs from china and then only thumbhole MAK90s and similar.
Yes, that was the one that started all this. Only prohibited foreign made “non sporting purpose” rifles. Courtesy of Bush Senior.

It is my understanding that the Clinton's put in place a ban on anything rifled out of China.
That is why Chinese shotguns are around, but no Chinese made rifles.
The VRA was the first hurdle to imports from Russia, now it is the financial sanctions too.
President Obama blocked the import of US origin surplus ( he was trying to block M1 rifles and M1 carbines coming from South Korea but his "Rose Garden" / Presidential Executive Action speech was quite a broad brush and affects all US origin surplus.
"Sporting Purpose" has been with us since 1968, in 1989 it was reinterpreted to cover the features found on modern semi-autos.
The grip keeps tightening.

The article at this link does a better job of explaining the position ATF imports division is taking.
This isn't new, last year I read about an importer of modern semi-auto's that suddenly wasn't able to import the "pistol" they had been bringing into the USA for some time.
I don't remember who it was, maybe a member here has that info.

That article linked is from 2020. Is this still the case? Anyone heard anything new about the Pindad FNCs?

It's been about six months, has anyone heard any new information about the Pindad FNCs?

Nada.

I've personally reached out to both Pindad and their importer, offering help with 922r, but received no response from either.

I think they will face significant challenges importing their FNC as a pistol. They’ll need to follow Arsenal's approach with their AKs to get these salable to us here in the US, which of course involves producing some US-manufactured parts. This is just my opinion based on the current evidence. Personally, I hope they can make it work. It would be great to have these available for US consumers.

Really hoping these are imported in some capacity. Pistol would be the best since it would be unmolested from the factory, but if it comes down to it a converted sporter is better than nothing.

The PM12 would be awesome to see as well, what would be the holdup with getting those over here?

I’m at the show right now and there’s no sign of them. They’re not listed as an exhibitor, but I would imagine that they’ve got a couple people floating around. They typically wear the same garb so if I see them all grab their ear.

Well, it looks like PT Pindad and Terratek USA were no-shows at Shot Show. Really disappointed to be honest. This (new production FNC imports) was some of the best news in the firearms world for years for me.

Silver lining at this years show was SNT Motiv announcing they’re bringing back the K2, I just hope it’s not the Pindad situation 2.0.

I specifically looked for them when I was at SHOT, and neither of them were listed in the list of booths, nor did they seem to be piggybacking on anyone else's booth.

My guess is the reality of trying to get their guns into the USA hit them.

ST Motiv is planning on building the guns here in the USA in a facility they are setting up in Las Vegas. The will be importing some of the parts, but also manufacturing some here in the USA, so they already seem to know what they are doing, and I got the "warm fuzzies" after talking to them- at least a few of the guys in their booth seem to understand the process, the difficulties, and they plan to launch the K2 first to test the USA market, then expand from there if things go well. That is a sign of smart planning IMHO.
