For my own personal ownership, the A2 is no more valuable than the A1 so I bought an A1 (at the lower pricing). It's my understanding that the A2 reinforcements were made because military personnel were breaking the lowers by using bayonet equipped M16 rifles to pry open crates and occasionally leaving the M16s places where they were run over by tanks, trucks, etc. I have not and don't have any plans to ever pry open crates with my M16, though I do have a bayonet in a box somewhere; and I don't leave it lying around (not even getting shot much in the last several years).

MHO, YMMV, etc.
All good points. My first M-16 was a Colt A1 and shot great. I sold it for $13,000.00 in 2011 ish. I wish I still had it. In my humble opinion, all machine guns are collectible and will continue to go up in value due to the limited number of transferable guns available. Some are just a little more rare/collectible and command a premium.

I'm a shooter, not collector. The Colt M16A1 that I have came at a reduced cost as it came with an L.E.O. id lightly electro-penciled on the right side of the magwell, though the gun appeared to have not been used much. That said, I guess there are some people who collect firearms with L.E.O. provenance.
MHO, YMMV, etc.

Just to clarify, is mine 1 of about 1500 M16A2’s with the 20” heavy barrel? Also, I forgot to mention, it is the safe/semi/auto marked version and not the burst version, if that makes any difference. Thanks again.
Did it come with a bipod attached?

I have an A2 SSA HBAR with bipod.

I have three colt M16A2s (POUSG 20”/BURST, burst/14.5” IDF carbine, annd AUTO marked 20” and an SMG/DOE 7”. I have been following the prices weekly if not daily for 15+ years. I recently had mine appraised for an insurance policy.

You cannot compare carbines to commandos to regular A2, etc. The carbines and commandos demand a premium of several thousand dollars. Auto marked versus burst marked buys you about $1000 in real world trading.

There is one on Sturm right now that the guy has not been able to sell for over six months listed at 48,500. BURST marked 20” A2.

Ruben consistently gets 15-20% more than other dealers (as Matt noted), and private sellers have to knock off about 5-10% compared to the other dealers. You can look hopefully at Rubens prices, but they need serious adjustment to be relevant to you as a private seller

You could probably get $45,000 for your gun relatively quickly, upwards of 50,000 but you might be holding onto it for six months or more like the guy on sturm.
