....an old raggedy looking Montgomery Ward 16 gauge that I picked up at a garage sale for seventy-five bucks.

I whacked the barrel to 18 1/2" and have it loaded with 2 3/4" No. 2 shotshells.

At the ranges with which I am concerned, 25 feet or less, the load is essentially a solid mass but will not go through the perp, the next wall and into the neighbor's house like 00 buck can.

Also pulled the plug so it can hold five rounds.

My HD shotgun is an older Remington 870 Express with a Police rifle sighted bbl, extended mag tube, and a sidesaddle and elastic butt cuff ammo holders. Choate pistol grip stock and Pachmayr forend. The tube is stuffed with 00 buck, as is the butt cuff. The sidesaddle is loaded with Remington Copper Solid slugs. Hanging beside it is the 30 rd bandolier/belt with a mix of slugs and buck. Screw the neighbors!

Actually none of the neighbors are very close, and the "Hallway of Death" (my bedroom is at the end of it) I would likely be firing down doesn't align with anything for a quarter mile or more.

The wisdom that I am familiar with is "Don't shoot someone with a gun that you like ". Even in a justified shooting, the police will confiscate that firearm used and won't give it back until all the appeals have been exhausted. That could be years, of which you won't be able to use the gun. Just a thought.

I agree with this. I have guns that are/have been 100 percent reliable with defensive ammo, accurate, but do not cost an arm and a leg, but would not be sick to "lose" them as they get lost in the legal system.
