I have an Olympic arms 9mm upper that the extractor blew off into orbit no where to be found…. Anyone have any leads on parts for these old guns before a spend my time attempting to make one? It at least appears to be based off an ar15 one judging by the tiny nub of it that remained in the bolt.

As I recall the Olympic 9mm blowback uppers used a spring ejector mounted on a cross pin at the bottom of the upper. I don’t have any leads as to where to find a replacement spring. I would suggest asking in the AR-15/M16 forum here. I would also suggest the retro forum at the name sake site. There might be an archived thread about where to source a spring that could be modified for use with this upper.

I would imagine that you would rather spend a couple of bucks on a replacement ejector. Have you looked into what has been going on with 9mm AR uppers with delayed mechanisms? I did have an Olympic 9mm blowback upper back in the day, but not for very long. I thought that that was the worst 9mm upper conversion for the AR option I have ever shot. The converted Sten mags with the steel adapter to lock into the mag catch were such a PITA. They don’t store well, they were hard to load, and even harder to carry with you. Having so much mass moving around inside the gun tended to cause much more perceived recoil. This also tended to cause more sight disruption, so follow up shots were slower. The technology certainly has improved since that upper was on the market.

Good luck with your 9mm conversion project.

It's been a while since I fooled around with one of those, but I think you are correct in that the extractor is a modified AR extractor and making one should consist of grinding the outer surface of it until it matches the contour of the tapered front of the bolt. The cross pin hole and hook should hopefully not require work. At least AR extractors are readily available and not expensive.

Yes holding an ar15 extractor next to the nub I have left of the old one …. It sure looks like it started life as one. I’ll just have to buy a couple and go nuts. Thanks for the insight!

Make sure you check the contour of your reworked extractor with an empty casing under it to make sure it won't hit the barrel when it is held outwards slightly by the casing.
