OK, well yesterday I received my 40S&W barrel from Barrel Exchange. First off the barrel looked great and was received unbelievably fast.
Now, me being who I am can't wait to head outside and try this thing out, because I have about 2500 rounds fo 40S&W and no gun to shoot them in. In anticipation of the 40 S&W arrival, I asked in another thread how to "tweak" the 45 mag lips for 40 S&W (I have been unable to obtain a GG lower yet, so all I have are a bunch of IMI 45 mags). Well I didn't receive any information in that thread, so I sinced this could be a setback, and I didn't want to go fudd a bunch of $100 mags.
Then I sat there in shock. Everybody said you can just use a 9mm extractor in the 45 bolt (oh yeah..I am going to use this for my 45 ACP registered bolt). I had kept meanign to order one, but I had forgot.
Great, now I have a new toy and no extractor and no mag dimensions. Well I figured maybe I could toy with a one mag and see where I got. So I loaded the mag with some rounds and thumbed them out. They seemed to feed the way they (the mags) are in my hand.
Now what about the extractor? Well, sometimes you can get by without one the blow back is good'nuff to power it to the ejector. I figured what the heck, at least I can check out the mag situation.
So between yesterday and today I fired around 700 rounds of 40 S&W. All using unmodified uzi 45 mags ((2) 10 rounders and (2) 16 rounders) and the 45 ACP extractor. I only had one failure and that was feed problem the push the bullet all the way back into the casing. AS a side note some of the 45 ACP IMI mags are opened up too far at the breech end and won't retain the 40's well, but rather then modify these, I just used the ones that fed ok without change.
So all and all I am very pleased, I think the 40S&W is a fun cartridge, I changed nothing from my 45 ACP setup other than the barrel. And it was worth teh cost of the barrel to be able to use all of the 40S&W ammo I had and the cost savings over 45 would probably cover the barrel.
