Yeah that's my method - side by side comparison of how they feel. But was wondering if anyone has an idea of how to measure in quantitative way. Only concepts I can think of are some kind of vibration measurement method, or since controllability is probably related to smoothness, target grouping numbers with mag dumps comparing subguns.
I think this is tricky. One objective measure would be accuracy of a 10 round burst at 25 yards. However there are many potential variables between guns that would be very hard to isolate including differing ROF, shooters ability with that specific weapon, and weight of any non factory accessories.
Plus, with machine guns we are often comparing more modern components and upper receivers that aren't factory options.
I know from reading a shotgun article that they can measure the recoil impulse of a shotgun using a machine that measures it, and you can put different ones in it and measure them. What this does not factor in is the difference the vector of the recoil impulse makes. In full auto, a gun that recoils straight back like an m16 should be more controllable than an AK47 with its curved stock.
It seems like the only way to measure it would be unsupported, which would be pretty unsafe with a mg. Measuring the movement of the barrel handheld wouldn't work because of shooter variance
