The Nightmare continues! Finally got my UZI today and head to the range with varoius magazines loaded with Win WAL-MArt stuff. Could not get a single magazine including the one that came with the gun to function 100%. Round would be stripped off and siting partially chambered with bolt partailly closed. Remove magazine, recock, and it would fire. Happened repeatly. Suggestions?

Are you loading mags to full capacity? By this I mean are you loading them until they wont take anymore rounds? It has been my experience with 25 rnd mags that they will actually hold 26 rnds but by doing so the top round is under too much tension and the amount of energy required for the bolt to strip that round from the mag is too great causing the gun to do just as you described. Hope this helps.

To send it back to Vector what is the procedure?
Call 'em. Ask for Mike. Discuss next steps with him.

Ship UPS. They cover insurance IIRC.

Malfunctions

After disassembly and cleaning the top cover (has ratchets) doesn't want to go forward readily. My guess is that this is the root of all the problems.

Normally when you pull the cocking knob all the way back, the bolt is held in place by the sear and then the cocking knob returns all the way forward before you even start shooting. As long as it has gone all the way forward, it should not interfere with shooting. (It shouldn't hang up either so that is a problem to look into but it seems unrelated.)

You could verify that it isn't the problem by removing the little pawl that grabs the teeth on the top cover. Then essentially it would be a non-ratchet top cover. See if that works any better. And be sure not to lose the little spring when you take the top cover apart.

Top Cover

After careful examination I see that part of the small spring that engages the teeth is bent and out of place. It won't stay put where it belongs either. A co-worker happens to have a parts kit and I am going to test it with his top cover. I laying good money that the ratchet spring is causing all the problems

If you do have to send it back to Vector, you do not have to do a Form 5 for repair. Just box it up and send it to them with a xerox copy of your Form 3 or Form 4. Turn around time is a matter of a few days. Let them know that it is on its way. Make sure to insure it for the appropriate amount. I am a dealer, so I could send mine USPS. I don't know what the rules are since you are sending it back to the manufacturer. Not sure if you have to use a common carrier and not USPS. Someone else should know.

Vector seems to prefer things shipped via UPS. They also insure the pachage for you so you don't need to.

Spring loose/bent

UPS is what they prefer and I think it's cheaper than USPS anyway. I am a dealer regardless so I can use USPS. Going to try friends IMI top cover first as I am sure that is the problem. If not then I can sent it back to Vector next week. Would rather send them top cover alone if problem is isolated.

I have found that when the rear facing portion of the ratchet spring is not square, that the ratcheting action becomes unreliable. The simple fix is to square it up with some long nose pliers. If the top cover handle binds at all, there is a very good chance that the spring is bound up between the cover and the ratchet lug body.

Does anyone know a locksmith with a digital camera that could post detailed pictures and instructions for ratchet reassembly?:D

Just that simple

With spare non ratching top cover gun worked great. Bad spring in racthing top cover caused all the problems.
