So now that it's happening I'm surprised no one has asked when?

About how long does it take the BATFE to approve or deny a new concept like this?
I know it's not new but it's not the sabre either.

I think it's Flyman that's over 10 months waiting for a answer from them on a submission.

mak91,

Any chance for us to get a preliminary picture of the mock up assembled on the lower?

Sorry, no picture of the upper / lower assembled and the upper is already boxed up and ready to ship to Richard on Monday. I can't think of a better way to bring a high quality upper using this design to market in the shortest amount of time and have outstanding customer service and support then to turn this over to Richards capable hands. Richard is going to run with it, I'll help him where I can and he wants. M11/15 was my name for it, he can call it what ever he likes and is appropriate for his line of uppers. He will add some Lage style to it and refine the design. Soon we will all be smiling and saying this is my favorite mac upper ever!

Ho ho ho.. I figured 12-18 months minimum but with NFA wait times sky high.. this is welcomed news. I'll be glad to make room for one more MAC upper.. they make tungsten AR bolts don't they?

mak91,

Does this run closed bolt or open bolt with the .223 upper attached?

Just the thought of a Lage M11/15 is the best news of the year so far!

Some FWIW opinions from a potential buyer who had cash in hand ready to buy a SABRE, but conscientiously chose not to...

1. Please keep the design simple and the weight to a minimum. (Lage's expertise!)
2. Please keep as many standard AR parts as physically/legally possible.
3. Please offer a stripped upper for sale at a fair price.
4. If possible, please try to keep the receiver rail height low enough to mate up with any AR handguard. Consider the DPMS 'high' AR-10 handgaurd dimensions if you need it to be a bit taller.
5. Consider an AR-compatible AK magwell offering as well (like the PSA KS47, MM47, MGI lower receivers) to facilitate shooting 7.62x39 using AK magazines and not the unreliable C-Products AR magazines.

The beauty of the AR platform is its modularity and the fact that you can build up a 'custom' gun from an insane variety of parts, while only being a 'gun-plumber' rather than a gun-smith. Some people will purchase multiple upper receivers if they are available stripped and ready to customize.

This is very exciting!

I've been through this a few times. For non-FFL holders, the typical turnaround time is one year. For FFL holders, Tech Branch's internal policy is to respond in writing within 120 days of receiving a physical sample. I've written Tech Branch both before and after receiving our FFL--and those timelines have always held true. I believe Richard has an FFL, so 120 days should get him an answer.

That was me after 2 phone conversations with AA

I have a 100% feeling this WILL NOT be the case with LAGE.

Hole or no hole produce one for the MAC 10 made by Lage I'll buy it.
Stripped would be the best for me. But if I have to buy a whole complete upper then so be it.

mak91,

The upper I am sending Richard fires from open bolt and just like the SABRE. As the bolt finishes rotating in the bolt carrier pushes the firing pin forward.

My plan was to make the rail height about .325 taller than a ar15 upper so guys who wanted to run iron sights could mount a "gas block" height front sight on the hand guard rail and a "same plane" rear sight on the receiver and have them line up. I think making the the two rails the same height will be difficult but maybe Richard knows some magic to make it work. You need to bolt the two halves together some where and there is a limited amount of places where you can place screws do to internal moving parts. I thought by moving the rail up it gave you the best of both worlds. Bottom line is what Richard thinks he can do with that.

This is me to a "tee".

I was going to buy a saber and supply my own parts (remember, sandy hook had just happened and just finding AR parts to complete the upper was near impossible at the time but I already had them).

Quoted me a price around $1400 I think if I supplied the AR parts. I was willing to do that, even though that was still steep in my opinion. Machine time for a receiver and anodizing still had a lot of meat on the bone for profit even at $800.

They kept hee-hawing around and pushing the deadline farther out and then sold the company, new owners almost doubled the price and obviously wouldn't honor the prior agreement so I walked away from it. But if Richard makes an M10 version, would seriously renew my interest.

I can see making some money on their product. And really, I have no problem with that. But just dont' try to make it all from me (I'm speaking about the saber, not Lage mfg).

For those that are saying "but M16's cost 20 grand" and are willing to pay more for an upper, doesn't really make too much sense either. It's still just an upper. Not a registered receiver. So, I don't treat it as a long term investment because it's not the same as a transferable receiver because it's not. It is what it is. An upper.

I understand the AR bolt would probably be modified with the longer extension from the task style buffer system. This could maybe be done by pinning an insert/extension into the rear of the bolt, but I would be more than willing to buy multiple stripped uppers and the other proprietary parts needed to work. So long as the price is reasonable.

At $900, I've bought 2 M10/9 uppers. And those were complete uppers. Make it so stripped lowers are affordable enough, and yeah, I'd be in for multiples so I could swap calibers easily enough. Though 223 or maybe blackout would be my primary interest.

Lol. You do THAT, and you'd have repealed the Hughes Amendment. Perhaps you meant upper?
