Last Saturday, I was at the High Caliber Gun Show and couldn't resist buying one of those "good" condition Yugo M59/66's. I'm still cleaning all the cosmoline out of the thing. It must have been shipped with at least a gallon of that shit in it. What do they do, do they take a perfectly good rifle and throw it in a vat of cosmoline? I just bought it, and a 40rd aftermarket magazine, for the overall "fun" factor. I remember having a day of fun with my uncle's old SKS back when I was in 2nd grade, and remember how damn fun it was, so, I just couldn't help it. I had to Dremel out the mag-well to get the aftermarket mags to fit. And, all the numbers on the gun match, even the stock.
Overall, I'm happy as hell with my purchase. I just wish there was a way to get that damn useless grenade launcher off to reduce the length a little bit. Next gun- either a Vector SA Uzi or one of those 9-shot Mossberg 590's.

You can have the grenade launcher taken off of the end of a Yugo SKS (66). A friend of mine is cutting one down approx .5" to 5/8 past the front sight post and recrowning the barrel.

Sounds like too much work for my intended purpose for it. I just wish there was some sort of dismounting lever on it.

Now that you've converted it to detachable mags, get some US parts from tapco to make it legal.

Yes, hurry, the ATF is already on the way to your house. Get them before the weekly rifle inspection.

It still has that useless stock 10-rounder in it. My next purchase for it is a dragunov-style stock. What else do I need?

keep the launcher and get the gol ball launcher cup thing, then some blank ammo and shoot some golf balls.

The very fact that you have a 5-decade old gun in new condition is thanks to those crafty Yugoslavs dunking in that dreaded cosmoline. As you're scrubbing, you should be thanking them. Nevertheless, it's a pain in the ass. I used brake cleaner on all metal parts, (let em soak) and used Simple Green on the stock. Even still, cosmo wept from the gun once it was heated up.

Leave the grenade launcher on! It's cool looking, historical and also adds a bit balance - shot recovery is better than on my Norinco. Besides, you may find a NATO practice grenade at a gun show and then really have some fun!

As for the 40-round mag, I hope you're not disappointed and don't blame the gun if it doesn't work - those mags are truly hit and miss, miss, miss. If you got a good one, hang onto it, because they're kind of rare, (one that functions reliably).

Personally, I stick to the 10-round stock mag and the stock stock for that matter. If you want an AK, save up 300-bucks and buy one, but to each his own I suppose.

In any case, congrats on your new Yugo - enjoy!!!

I just traded an old beat up Russian captured k98 for a Yugo SKS 59/66. It is one that was imported by Cherrys and it is beautiful. I want to get a Russian, a Romanian, and a Albanian next. I almost don't don't want to shoot it. haha

Congrats on your first gun!

Mine's imported by Century Arms. I wouldn't mind having a Russian or Romanian SKS either, but I wouldn't want one of those Albanians.

Top one's the Yugo, and the bottom is a Norinco:

I like the AK mag well on the Norinco. The drums won't fit though, since the mags latch further inside vs. an AK:

Just bought some Winchester white box for it- $20 for 40rds. I'm going to Ft. Worth this weekend, and I'm taking it with me. Can't hardly wait... Can't do much with 40rds, though...

OK, you can't leave me hangin' on this one.. Where do you get the stock?

Now for my range report....
I fired 60rds through it yesterday with only 1 FTF, i think you call it a stovepipe, where the bolt doesn't cycle all the way and the spent round gets stuck in between the chamber and the bolt. I think this is because I didn't lubricate the gas piston.

i never lube my gas pistons...i clean them well but never lube them....

i have lubed them in the past and it led to a smoke show.
failures in sks are ultra rare, but remember it is a really old gun that was packed with grease for many years,
i have had problems with one of my yugos, and determined it was the extractor spring, as springs that are old will lose their tension and become lazy afterawhile....

I just thought it was the piston because after I was done firing it, I field stripped it to better wipe off some cosmoline that surfaced due to heat (it was over 100 degrees outside) and found that I had to use a pen to punch the piston out of the tube due to carbon fouling.
