Since the forum moderators closed my original thread from 2012 (titled: "Got my Galil AR 5.56 Back from Tenngalil"), I'm compelled to start a new one.

In the spirit of sharing, below are a few work in progress photos that Jeff Miller provided to me during the past week. I'm having Jeff rebarrel the Galil AR 5.56 Rifle that he built for me back during 2012.... he's adding a custom 21" heavy barrel, picatinny railed gas tube, and a picatinny rail to the bottom of the gas block which will allow mounting of a heavy duty bipod. When finished I will also be able to swap out the Galil bolt carrier and handle with an AK bolt carrier (to provide the hand clearance I believe I'll need when operating the bolt handle with a pistol scope mounted forward on the gas block).

As I said, these are simply WIP pics.

That's awesome.
I see Jeff's classic red pickup in the shots, and know the pictures are from him, so whenever your able to, keep the pics coming. (I need a new wallpaper for my computer!)
Long overdue to see one of these beautiful heavy barrel projects.
Is that one of the Miller/Douglas SS barrels?
I guess it's 1 inch thick up to the front handguard retainer, but somehow it looks thicker.
I'd love to know the diameters of the barrel, and see some shots of the custom front handguard retainer, and gas block.
Do you plan on some kind of bipod mount?
This rifle was beautiful before, don't get me wrong, but now it's really......wild!
Congratulations!!!

Yes, I believe its a Miller/Douglas SS barrel (it been so long since I placed the order for it.... my memory isn't what it used to be).

Jeff went over with me the barrel's outside diameter at different locations along the barrel's length; out at the muzzle device, the step for the handguard retainer bracket, and inside the handguard to the barrel's breach. I remember him saying that at the muzzle end the barrel is a frog's hair narrower than 1.00 inch exactly. The rest of the barrel's OD measurements went in to one ear, and right out the other. Sorry.

I sent Jeff a new GG&G Heavy Duty bipod to mate with a picatinny rail piece that he will be welding onto the bottom of the Galil's gas block.
Due to the custom barrel's OD, I believe Jeff said he would need to go with a Yugo gas block.... but I could have misunderstood him.

I appreciate the kind words Ares. Thank you.

90% certain I see the cowl of toyota pickup (guess is 2nd gen, though possibly 3rd -- effectively, these are the only hiluxes available in the US)... If so, Jeff's a man w/ shared mechanical interest other than just Galils!

Ares -- believe I have a PM from you to respond too. Have been to busy to inventory and too tired to do math, but it is on my list!

I've got a quick detach ring mount for the pistol scope on order, so.... photos of her in that configuration will have to wait.

Technical question - with the barrel being extended past 18", how do you compensate for the increased dwell time?

Otherwise all I can say is that looks awesome. With such a long and heavy barrel, I can't think of a potentially more accurate version of the Galil. You've got to post some groupings.

Dwell time is the time it takes the bullet to go between the gas port and the muzzle.
In short barreled rifles, like the AR-15 10.5" and less, this is problematic, as it decreases the amount of time the bolt has to lock up properly.
Longer dwell time are not a problem. (as far as I know)

Beautiful gun, looks like it weighs a ton though.
You've gotta' scope that thing, and let us know how it's grouping!
Really beautiful!!

She is a bit of a beast, which is why I went with the heaviest duty bipod I could locate. The rifle weighs 10 lbs. 13.5 oz. completely dry.

Thank you for the information regarding dwell time, and the kind remarks. I'm very anxious to get a scope on her as well.

Sorry, the dwell allows the bolt to Un-lock, and cycle properly. Big problem is you don't have enough dwell time.

Apologies if I used the terminology incorrectly - just interested in knowing what changes, if any, were made to the gas system with the barrel that's 2" longer. But after sleeping on it I realized that since the .308 Galils use the same barrel length and parts, the design already allows for it. I learn something new every week. :D

Shouldn't need any changes, & you could probably go to a smaller gas opening (less recoil) as the bullet is in the barrel longer keeping pressure in the barrel longer so it can cycle. That is why shorter barrels need larger gas openings to cycle reliably because the bullet exits the barrel faster releasing all the barrel pressure resulting in short stroking of the bolt if not enough gas is retained to cycle the weapon.

I've loved the Galil since the 1980's. I recall seeing one on the wall at a gun store and thinking "that's it". The rifle is surprisingly accurate in it's stock form, especially for a weapon based on an AK design.

It would be great to see some groups out of this thing.
