I have a mk2 sten that I'm making a mk5 conversion for - without actually using the mk5 trigger housing.....no I don't want to cut the mk2 housing off just to move the trigger guard forward an inch....anyway I have the stock and the pistol grip done and I've been working on the barrel...got it turned down and the front site built using correct parts but I noticed the hole pattern on the 'handguard/barrel shroud' on the mk5 original (marked R.F.I. and SA) has a different hole pattern then the mk2 one I was planning on using. I can adapt the mk2 by welding up the middle holes and drilling a few more so it will match the original but I wanted to check and see if this is a must do to be correct or do I just have some weird Finnish/variant mk5 kit....? Or would a mk2 standard one still be correct?

Thanks

According to "the book" the Sten MkII and Sten MkV/5 indeed do have different hole spacing on the barrel nut.

According to P. Laidler, the reality was that they were interchangeable in service, and the MkII pattern was commonly seen and used on the Mk5.

If you're just making a representative example, I don't know why you would worry about it...

Well because I'm anal of course...lol. just want to get it as close as I can without messing with the receiver. Lots of the conversions (non receiver mod'ed) look rather crude. This one is going to be as good as I can make it.

I have had a half dozen mkv stens pass over my workbench in the past two or three years and half or more had the mk2 barrel nut and shroud. The only problem I have run into when converting mk2 shrouds into mkv, is that the holes are not laid out radially on a lot of them, although since the holes are 120 degrees apart it isn't really noticed. But once you put those other 3 holes in each row, the alignment problem becomes noticeable. Make sure to measure a few times and center punch exactly where you want them. I use the lathe to scribe where to drill.

I have also modified mk2 trigger housings in the past to make them into mkV housings. A real PIA, but in the end the look is worth it.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I've got a problem that this thread talks about. I've got a complete Mk5 kit, except the trigger housing, that I'd like to make into a dummy. Seeing as that part is rare as rocking horse poo, the talk of turning a Mk2 trigger housing is very attractive to me. Does anyone know how this is done?

Thanks!
