That's kinda like the first thing that floated through my brainpan as well...

5.56 will never happen.

1: ATF would likelly not aprove of it. they don't like you going up in caliber power, only down.
2: it would require a closed bolt action and gas operation, plus a longer barrel......Too much $$$ and time to make IMO
3: the point was to make the thing cheaper to shoot in the first place, with mags I had on hand allready, 5.56 is going the wrong direction.

BTW, got some video today, and it is running right at 850rpm, which is perfect for me. Strangely suppressing it did not change the ROF. I will try to get the video up this weekend.

why would it have to be closed bolt?

Open bolt on a rifle cartridge would have to be a VERY massive bolt with a VERY strong spring, or a roller locked system....Otherwise kaboom.

wouldn't necessarilly have to be closed bolt, but in order to use standard AR components it would. And that would be the only way to really keep the cost reasonable.

If the gas and locking system was set up correctly the bolt would weight the same or less than a standard m11/9 bolt. open bolt does not have to mean its a blowback operation

What he said. I bet you could get ahold of some open bolt at parts somewhere. I see them on gunbroker sometimes. I don't remember the model number but there was an open bolt m16.

I saw a cobbled-together .22 upper about 15 years ago for a MAC-10 that was similar. As with yours, the magwell was moved forward of the MAC frame. But that's where the similarities stopped. It used a lot of 10/22 parts inside some square tubing, and looked like just a haphazard collection of... stuff. Nothing so refined as what you have built.

Bravo!

Are you planning to market this? I know I'd be very interested.

I don't have the manufacturing capacity to produce this, and the design still needs some refinement.....but maybe there are some other companies that could handle manufactureing, once I finish the design. There is one local company that I have showed it to (the owner comes to our local subgun matches). If there is enough interest....perhaps it could happen....In time.
