Looking for any sort of hard copy literature relating to the Galil. I have Patrick Sweeney's (rather pathetic) Book of the AK & SKS, but the Galil section is short and sucks (which makes it a bit like most of the rest of the book).

Anyway. Any suggestions?

I'm also looking for some creative writing on the Galil. I don't know about anyone else, but whenever I go to the grocery store, I habitually am drawn to the magazine rack. I mean like... c'mon man, how much dribble can be written about the AR-15, Glock and 1911 that hasn't been said on and on. And the cost for what is mainly advertisments and endorsements by yes men I personally find insulting. Occasionally Guns and Ammo will publish a specialty mag I will buy like surplus arms, AK-47, Winchester Model 70, etc. but I usually just pass on by. A special edition on the Galil and its derivatives that wasn't just a rehash of what Peter Kokalis said years ago sure would be refreshing. History, interviews with former Israeli, South African, and South American soldiers, Golani, the guys that make the Golani actually work, accessories, etc. There's a lot of potential out there, and I bet they would sell every copy. Where's the Elmer Keiths and Skeeter Skeltons anymore?

They're out there. They just all sold their souls to the highest bidder.

That is handy, although inaccurate (as Valmet and Arsenal both produce/produced stamped receiver 5.56mm AKs, to say nothing of the then virtually unknown 5.45mm M74). In fact, the author appears to get a good deal wrong about the AK. And, despite what the author says, the handguard is removable. And the AR variant of the Galil isn't much heavier than an AR-15 or AK.... But I digress.

Over two decades have passed since that article was written: A lot has changed in the world, since then. Like Israel mothballing their Galils.

I'm not knocking you for trying.

I'm just saying, old stuff is old. ;)

I've seen the Remtek and Wikipedia articles, but the book on Amazon (in addition to having me somewhat worried) and the zahal.org are both new to me.

I don't know about articles but a few years back the History channel did several shows about Isreal and at least one of them had a good bit of video and info about the Galil. It also had an interview with a retired soldier who used them a lot. This particular interview even showed his own personal Galil that he had modified with a lighter stock for his own use.

Try history channel online for Israel or maybe tales of the gun, I can't remember which. This was the best Galil info I have seen in at least a decade or two, other than this site of course.

I feel the same way you do about the magazines and it would be nice to see something new. I do miss the old style of writing and get bored quick with these "extended sales ads" that you get now.

I recall thinking that it was an AK, at the time. And I knew what a Galil looked like back then, too. (The first wood gun my dad made for me out of wood was a Valmet Rk62... which I chose... so I think I knew what a Galil looked like a couple years back.)

That being said, there might be some interesting information in The Gun by CJ Chivers. It's supposed to be a history of the AK and how the AK changed history.
