I received a new ARM gas block from Blackthorne and took it to my gunsmith to have my Golani AR gas block swapped out. Gunsmith tells me that it is for a .308, but I believe I read elsewhere that it was compatible.

What's the real deal?

Thanks, David!

The ARM gas block that I got from Blackthorne had a barrel bore that was out of round, Tengalil was unable to get it to seal resulting in a rifle that would not cycle. Found an IMI unit on Gunbroker that worked perfectly. I hope yours works.

Was there anything that specified what caliber it was for? Are they universal, and my gunsmith is confused?

It came in a 5.56 kit so I dont know if they are compatible or not. Somebody here will be able to tell you. You will get an answer real soon im sure. Lots of Galil experts here. Im not one of em.

Ok so I looked back at the Gunbroker auction. It says it is for either 5.56 or. 308. It came with a new bipod which I gave away here. It cost me $175.00 I was desperate. Hope this helps.

David,
The area on the barrels that the gasblock sits on (wheter .223 or .308); is the same dimension;
.6315 . So the i.d. of the gasblocks is .631 ; giving it a .0005 press fit.

Get a pair of calipers and check the I.D.dimension of your gasblock. Let us know what you have. Also, check the O.D. of the seat on your Golani.

Blackie had those gas blocks made somewhere where centerline/dim. doesn't exist.
i've seen the barrel holes egg shaped/oversized.
check the gas piston hole- make sure it's not off to one side.
i've had several that either the rifle would cycle and the sights were way off or the sights were good but the piston would bind.
the only different dim. gas blocks i've seen are the early Galatz.
another bit of advice is check the alignment of the gas block and gas tube- usually the gas piston flange on the block is .100 too far forward.
you'll need to turn the barrel to match it up and check gas port alignment.

Bokchoy,
I have a Golani also that I would like to convert to a ARM style rifle. I hate to tell you this after you have gone thru all this trouble to get a ARM gasblock from Blackthorne, but Jeff Miller (Tenngalil) can actually convert your gasblock to accept a bipod (by adding more metal on the bottom of the gas-block). the receiver on my Golani is starting to bulge and I figure that once Jeff repairs it that it will become a ARM :)

Thanks for the info! After looking more closely at this piece I did notice it was oval shaped on one end. lcastillo says that you can convert an AR gas block to an ARM. How much would that run, and how badly are you backlogged?

Damn, thanks for the intel! My conversion was going pretty well until I brought it to the gunsmith. Aside from the gas block being screwed, the flash hider is pinned and welded so i'm going to have to chop the barrel to even get the block off! I settled on a rear hanger without carry handle from 24 hr Tactical just to have the thing assembled. The ARM handguard I received from Silver Crescent IS a thing of beauty though!

welding will leave hot spots- when the gas block is refinished it will probally be lighter/darker than the rest of the gas block.
option is to cerakote the gas block.
$ depends on the gas block you have.

Far out! I got an RMA to return/ swap the bad gas block with Blackthorne. We'll see what I get next and go from there.

You also need to get the dimensions that was discussed above; that will tell you what you have and if it can be accomplished.

Leave it to Blackhole for their quality product.

Hey Jeff, weren't you going to make some ARM gas blocks last year? or has that idea been scrapped?
I was interested in getting a few and some .223 Barrel pinned Bayo-Lugs.
