So, I was reading up on AOW and came across this:

The definition of an AOW includes "weapons with combination rifle and shotgun barrels 12 inches or more, less than 18 inches in length, from which only a single discharge can be made from either barrel without manual reloading".

So, can I Form 1 an AOW just as I could Form 1 a SBR/SBS?

Guru & T-Shirt Wearers advice sought.

Ok, I'm straightened out now on this. $200 Bucks to Form 1 any "type" of gun. Whether its a AOW, or not, doesn't matter.

I think a SOT could 'make it' tax free and then transfer it back to me for a $5 Buck Red Stamp on a Form 4.

Yep, you got it exactly right on all counts.

Although technically it wouldn't be "tax free" for an SOT because they already paid $500 at the beginning of the year to be an SOT. But that's just semantics, right? :)

I've got an M6 Scout and I've thought about it, to get the barrels shortened based on a quick conversation with a smith would be fairly pricey on top of the stamp. I decided it wasn't worth it to lose 4" or so.

Yes, but the SOT is not going to do everything to "make it" for free. He will have to do the barrel work; engrave his name, city and state as the manufacturer; register it with ATF on a form 2; prepare the form 4 for you; and then store it for a year while waiting for your form 4 to be approved. The cost of all that may end up being the same vs you doing it on a form 1.

Yeah, might not be worth it because of the cost of the gun smithing involved to remove and re-attach the barrel band with the integral front sight and also having to re choke the .410 barrel. That and the $200 tax= diminishing returns for 4" of bbl. and being able to fold the gun. Too bad because the original configuration (with a .22LR) of the M6 would be a premier Backpacking Gun/Survival Gun. Thanks for all the help though.

It also may not be worth it because those $200 M6 Scouts are now hovering around $600 last i checked. I have one NIB that I contemplated something along the same lines but now I am thinking that as an AOW it would be worth less than an original.
