I'm getting deep firing pin strikes on the new striker assembly that I purchased.
I've heard that some have shortened the firing pin.
I'm interested in knowing how they did that, and I'm wondering if the pin has been heat treated. Would the heat treating process only be so deep?
So, if I shortened the pin, would I remove the heat treating, and would it be more prone to wear?
I don't know why they didn't make them in spec. Oh well, it is what it is.
There doesn't seem to be any original ones available.

Never worked on a semi auto, but can't you just put a spacer/washer/shim over the firing pin that shoulders up against the round stop on the pin so it hits the back of the bolt and can't protrude so far?

Original semi bolt, and the striker assembly is a us made part.
I'm guessing for the uc-9.
I guess I can swap out the firing pin.
I bought the new striker assembly due to the end that meets the sear, was buggered up.
I'd still like to know if I can shorten the firing pin without removing the heat treatment, if there is any.

Just try it. Is broken already anyhow and it's not like your going to be removing 1/4 inch. They make more firing pins. They don't make more time

If you grind the tip slowly and occasionally dip it in water/oil you won't ruin the heat treat

Don't let the tip get hot as you grind it:
If it is way too hot to touch before you dip, you are grinding too fast...

1/4sec grind - dip - 1/4sec grind - dip ...

curious - other than the hits being deep, are they causing an actual problem? I.E. - are you getting cracked primers or failure to eject?

No, no problems, but it looks like the firing pin Is trying to get into the flash hole.
That's how deep they are.
I'll switch out the firing pin from my original striker assembly.
