On observations/reviews on CNC vs. Tortort receiver for the Galil AR? Where would you put your money?

Could someone please define some of the reasons why? My thoughts are CNC makes a quality product as a opposed to previous available offerings. Both use 4140 heat treated steel. CNC shot peens their receivers which is a plus in my book. My guess would be you would have more custom options in the finishing of the receiver like the choice for dual lightening cuts & such. If anyone else could expound upon why they see Tortort being better that would be helpful to all.

CNC used to be the go to receiver before because they have the dimensions and hardness iirc but they don't offer 80%. They also won't ship to California that turned me off. They were very expensive during that time and not very many can afford it. When Tortort came into the scene, they have become the top receiver due to proper dimensions, hardness and competitive price. Barrel timing is on the spot and well recommended by Jeff Miller and most accomplished home builders like mullick and Austin. I can't find any better reason to choose CNC over Tortort. These are just my thoughts.

CNC-W never had any heat treating issues, that I've ever heard of.
Neither did Tortort.
CNC-W did have some stock pin location holes drilled slightly to far rearward.
No machining problems at all reported from Tortort.
The shot peening from CNC-W is interesting.
Both are Excellent receivers, Tortort is considerably less expensive.
Some may have had other, unspecified issues with the CNC-W (????)
There may possibly have been some issue with carriers "jumping" at the end of their rearward travel in a few CNC-W receivers, I had one like that, but it could have been caused by other things too, I never did pin it down, someone else had the same issue.

Hmm, I had no problem getting my receivers to Commiefornia. YMMV

I can see the price point, but if you are having it built by someone you are going to be paying roughly the same as, due to the machining cost to complete the receiver.

Both are fine receivers, Tortort is Excellent, and a bit less expensive.

I was talking to Jeff this morning and asked about this, he says they are both quality receivers, same steel, while he did mention about some of the receivers having the stock roll pin hole issues & shallow serial #'s so the paint was not sticking. Jeff's main point was the availability of the Tortort seems to be available more often, but both are of good quality.

Thank you both for adding to the conversation V.S this one or that one for those coming behind us

Thanks to all who responded (and will respond). The information is most helpful. I did not know about the issue of CNC's stock roll pin hole issue on some receivers.

Yeah it's been reported on a few & it's fixable so not a complete deal breaker. My 5 were fine (3) 5.56's & (2) .308's

Torttort.
Excellent quality.
Excellent price.
Readily available.
Active in the galil community.
Continues to improve and refine there products while stepping outside the comfort zone and trying new designs and receivers and actually listening to feedback of builders.
Stand up guys.
I look forward to building many more using torts receivers.

I go tortort but have built numerous CNC w as well as all the others. Id add that on one of the CNC-W 556 receiver the scope dovetail cut was a bit off needing realignment that wasnt real easy to do. A few had mis drilled BG holes (Not a big deal)...All of the CNC had spot on heat treating. Rear roll pin hole on 1 of mine had a slight angle. But you know none of these problems are a absolute deal breaker. If you build you deal with it. Hell Ive had spot on perfect ORF/AWO receivers and then I had some that were boat anchors that needed more attention than a 4 YO.

All that aside I like the Tortorts better as they resemble the original more in the Angles and grooves where cut. Some will argue Im sure and thats fine. Ive did the comparison to the small stash I got and I assure you they are near identical to a mid to late 80's IMI receiver minus the 3rd pin. The tortorts do have some sharper edges but I expect that when starting a build so get your file or sand paper out :)

Bottom line the price is super great and a 80% option is there. I also sometimes build other variants and think its great Tortort makes nearly all the milled variants.

Makman90 also mentioned Tortort is active in the AK community and thats 100% true. He has been known to listen and share his opinion and take recommendations from time to time and that in itself is the difference.
