Probably discussed before. How many Recoil spring coils when using a M11a1 in 9mm with a CFW a bolt. Thanks.

That is a difficult question. It depends on who sold the main spring,

Tom was selling "orange" springs. Orange refers to the paint Tom used to identify the 5 different springs he gave me to test. I have extra of those. For Orange 63-65 are best for. 380. 90 was best for 9mm on the M11A1.

I don't know what Sam was using. He included 2 springs so people could tune it themselves.

What Sam told me when I asked substantially the same question:

“The spring is an M11/9 spring cut to 66 coils. Start with 5 coils longer.”

Yes Sam said a plain m11/9 spring, but wouldn’t elaborate how many coils? So SLOWMO your saying cut a m11/9 spring down to 71 coils?

That is a direct quote from an email I have from Sam. I interpret it the same way you did. Start with 71 (understanding there could be runaways) and cut a coil at a time towards 66 until you are happy with the results.

Want to sell a few orange springs?

I have 2 uncut springs that is 110-111 coils and 2 that are 70-71 coils. 1 uncut spring not enough for 2 - 9mm bolts or even a 9mm and a 380. With the cut springs its enough for a 9mm and a 380. Did you want parts for 9mm and 380?

I tried to measure the "orange" springs but my calipers are not making accurate measurements off the flexible springs. The "orange" spring is about 12" long, After 5 tries, the numbers don't add up but they are basically .035"-.039" diameter wire, .276 -.280" OD, .206 -.208" ID.

Thanks. I’ll have to dig up a regular M11/9 spring and compare it.

Tom was playing with a lot of different springs. I have a bunch he gave me but I always used OEM springs. From What Beau Hawthorn (AKA theColtCollector) told me he would measure a new OEM 9mm spring against a new unused 380 spring and cut it an inch longer, then cut a coil at a time till he got the felt recoil and ROF he liked.

I just realized after revisiting this thread that you were talking about running 9mm. The 66-71 advice was for .380. Hopefully I didn’t send you down the wrong path.

I’d have to assume what stobro said. 90 coils and go down from there one at a time?

Just got some m11/9 springs from MPA. They have a WD of .039. ID of .207 and OD of .278. Interesting…………..🤨
