Hey guys, I'm wondering if you have any input on the McKay ($240) vs BWE ($700) receivers. I'd like to get as close to factory spec as possible while remaining legal and I've heard that after bringing a McKay up to spec it would cost more than a BWE. Any truth to this? Thanks.

I guess it's all about what is most important to you and how much $$ you want to spend, time to wait. I have built on 2 McKay receivers. The only work I had to do to the receiver was clean up the trunion welds(flush to receiver like IMI) so I could use a Mako Tri-Rail and then chase the threads on the barrel nut so my can mounts would fit there. After that it's been gravy and they run like a champ. Note - I took McKay to task on the barrel nut thread chasing and they finally copped to having a batch of trunions cut by a vendor that didn't cut the threads as true as needed. They said they were going back to their previous vendor who did better work. This was a year or so ago so I suspect their next run may only need the trunion welds cleaned up.

Richard does amazing work and everything I have bought there has been completely worth the price. Also, If you want to spend a whole bunch of $$ on a gun just so it's "close to factory spec" maybe buy a Model A/B.

I had an issue with my mckay barrel fitting my mckay reciever and my handgaurd lug was slightly canted. I also have the same issue with the welds up front not fitting a fab rail. I know im forgetting something else but it was another small issue i was able to fix with a dremel or hammer. But wow 700 for the BWE is alot imo i think id pick the mckay and fix the few simple issues i may or may not have. But hey im a cheap ass

Here is a list of what our Uzi receivers have that McKay's do not.

1) Ours are built to IMI spec and checked with IMI gauges.
2) IMI Spec SMG Trunnion
3) Our Machined SMG Feed Ramp
4) SMG spec sear holes
5) Sling swivel installed
6) Fully finished and parkerized

You simply drop your IMI spec parts into our receiver. Check your top cover gap and go shoot. The McKay receivers need work to get them running.

Our receivers have a blocking bar so they are semi auto receivers. They use an SMG spec barrel. They make very nice semi auto SBRs or pistols.

Do a search here on the BWE and the Mckay stuff.
Already in this thread you have seen complaints of this and that against McKay.

I betcha you don't find a single thread/post or response in the negative about BWE UZI receivers.

That said I have neither Mckay nor BWE,

If I was in the market and these were my choices this thread alone would tell you where my money would go.

Would the work needed to change the McKay to a factory IMI spec receiver be worth the $460 difference?

if you buy a BWE receiver by the time you get all the parts to put together an uzi , it would cost the same as an IMI model or model B . It's really that simple and I'm not ragging on Richards receivers . All his stuff is top notch .

A few years back I bought a McKay that had an out of spec trunion installed. The trunion nose was 0.015 too long and the ratchet thingy did not engage the barrel nut. I had access to a vertical mill so I milled the trunion nose back to the correct dimensions. I would have sent it back, but they delayed shipping it out a month or so because they had to re-weld the trunion due to weld failures.

My receivers are unique from all other receivers. They are SMG spec but with a blocking bar so they are semi auto. I decided to make them this way for the people with registered bolts, and the people wanting to make SBRs or pistols. If I wanted a 16" barrel carbine I would buy an IMI and not build one on my receivers.

Trump, I charge more then the difference in the cost of the receivers to bring a receiver up to SMG specs.

Yes, it is worth the difference. When you buy the McKay receiver you are a step up from a shell.

Thanks for the input, guys.

Richard, what is the difference between your receiver and the IMI if you build it to their spec? I'm not too familiar with the IMI receiver since I figured it would be hard to find and expensive.

Woo boy, that's about twice or more of what I'd be spending just finishing this parts kit when I checked on gunsamerica.com.

Richard, what would it take to use a 16 inch semi barrel in one of your receivers. I do not want an SBR unless the ATF changes to rules to make it easier in the future.

(not trying to speak for anyone or spend anyone else's $$) It might be worthwhile to see if Richard would be willing to cut a 16" barrel as SMG spec so you can start your project now and convert to SBR later if the rules change.

If you can find an IMI semi auto receiver they are set up to semi auto spec not SMG spec. They have a 9mm grip lug pin, semi auto sear holes and set up for a semi auto barrel.

My receivers come stock set up for Model A sights but I can custom build one for Model B sights.

When I get some barrel blanks I will in I will be making some 16" SMG spec barrels.
