I'm considering venturing to the M 16 realm. What is the best way to go, Lighting Link, Drop in Auto sear, registered receiver? Does the sear or link really just drop in to an Ar receiver or are there modifications to make? I appreciate everyone's opinions.

It depends on your likes and desires. I would stay away from a LL because I see them as just a slight upgrade from the string trick, but that is me. Next would be the RDIAS. Some like them better than RR guns because you can put one in any lower you want and they would most likely survive a KB. With the variety of lowers available for different magazines that is a very real benifit if you are interested in that. Even if you are not interested in that option you may want to go that route just in case you get the itch later on. The down side to a RDIAS is that sometimes you have to tweek them to work in a given lower / upper combo, but that is a minor inconvenience. I bought a RR over a DIAS for one reason. I bought a Shrike upper before I bought an M16. The open bolt option will only work with a RR. I may beet my lower to heck if I use it, but then I own an Oly conversion, and I'll just send it back to have it rebuilt if I damage it. IHTH. Happy shopping.

A lot will also depend on how much you want to spend and what your purpose is. Do you want an investment gun or a shooter. In my case, I wanted both. I purchased a beautiful Colt 614. I removed everything from the lower including the pistol grip and replaced with newer components. I shoot it regularly, but I a only use Orlite mags. I can replace all the orginal parts and sell it for much more than I paid. A lot of investors want a Colt, but you will pay more for one. Several manufacturers made quality guns (ie Bushmaster). You can save a little buying one of these. Be careful though, the price range can be pretty wide especially on the Colts.

I agree with Paul556 re the LL.

Good luck!

Good point. My first M16 was a Colt Carbine. Sweet gun, but every time I shot it I felt like I was kissing the Monalisa. The stock was staked, so I couldn't change the stock or I would loose about $1000 in the value of the gun. I sold it and bought my Oly. The price diff was $4000. After poceting that I really ony have about $4000 invested in my Oly. I don't cringe when I shoot the Oly.
