I just use CLP and wipe it off real good like i clean normally. But if it is really tough you can soak it overnight.

Will that mess up the finish? I think my mags are packerized

I have soaked plenty of greasy parts in minerals spirits. Never noticed any ill effects. If it doesn't damage a nylon bristle paint brush, I doubt it would hurt parkerized steel.

Kerosine works for me, and cleaner than diesel, no additives. I use what they call K-1 or water white. Hth, John.

I second the kerosene method. Diesel will work as well. For stubborn stuff, Simple Green works, but it strips ALL the oil off and you might get some very fast rusting if you don't dry and oil thoroughly.

Ed's Red: 1 part unscented kerosene, 1 part unscented mineral spirits, 1 part synthetic automatic transmission fluid. You can put a little acetone in this mixture but don't use it on painted or plastic parts if you do and use a glass container. I have 30 gallons of this stuff in my parts washer no acetone and it works like a champ. No I haven't burned the shop down yet. I think the ATF raises the flash point and I ran my pump in water pipe for conduit. WD40 cleans good but it must be dried / wiped off well, as it will kill primers. Break cleaner works good also, but the part will be bone dry when you are finished and it will eat some plastic and paints, oil the part if you use break cleaner CLP, Marvel mystery oil (cleans best), or synthetic ATF which wont eat gas system O rings. Cosmoline wont hurt anything heat it in the wife's oven (I don't have one of those , but I do have an oven) and then wipe it off.

Oh yea:

Simple green will eat any grease or oil, but it is washed with water. Don't use heat to dry your water washed parts as they will rust. Wipe them dry then oil, see above. CLP leaves the best protective coating of oils a good light grease is better. You can use a brass brush for tough stuff and Blue Scotch Brite from the grocery store don't use either dry. Use with oil (best) or solvent (Ed's Red) or Hoppies (same thing has acetone and scent) You can get the scent from a candle supply I put it in my ATF or Marvel.
