I picked up an NRA edition mini-14 a few weeks ago on the cheap and I'm thinking about getting the barrel threaded.

I've done barrel swaps/removal on every gun I know of EXCEPT one of these .

Are specific tools required ?

Would it be even worth my time ??

You will need a barrel vise and action wrench for th removal. Trust me have a mini 14/30 gunsmith do the job......pain in the ass:)

I called about doing it,And he told me to send it to them, and they even pay s/h free. The gun was picked up the next day, barrel was free to. They went over the gun,It looked new when he shiped it back.

Who is it you sent your rifle to for the removal?

Gun54 probably sent his gun to Ruger (I have done the same thing). They (Ruger) will replace your barrel with a new factory barrel free of charge. Most Ruger weapons have this warranty.

Most. They haven't offered any support for the AC556 in several years. Which is sad; that used to be a big selling point for the AC556.

I traded my mini-14 off to a friend for a 43 Winchester M1 Carbine + $100 in 30 carbine ammo.

i would never let that guy touch any of my weapons.buy useing that incorrect tool to remove and install the barrel,he could inadvertantly tweek the action in the middle creating issues.there are numerous action wrenches that are adaptable or can be made adaptable
to be used correctly to grab the action as close as possible to the barrel stub.
