Interested in getting up to speed on equipment needed for a Subgun shoot, so looking for links or pics of examples of a Molle vest that will hold Suomi drums, and a drum carrier/holder. Richard mentions the use of having a drum carrier, but I cannot locate anything on the Lage website or elsewhere. There is a match coming up in a week in TX, so looking to gear up prior to attending and either observing or participating with a MAX 10-31.
Thanks

Only milsurp drum carriers I've seen were shoulder strap ones, essentially round canvas purses. I believe the Finns usually carried their drums by attaching a strap to the loop on the side and slinging them individually. And IIRC the Russian PPsH41 drum pouches had belt loops on them in addition to a shoulder strap. None are what I would consider quick access like you need in a match.

About the closest thing I can think of that would work is maybe the 200rd M249 SAW gunner pouches used with the US Army FLCV setup. Just a big rectangular pouch, should be about the right size.

And they do make combo molle/shoulder strap pouches for shotgun drums, dunno how close the size would be.

Lage sold these drum holders at one time. I think I have six of them. Might call Lage and ask.

Any of the guys who do custom Kydex holsters would probably be able to make something up for you you will probably have to take them a drum to use in the mould... I suggest taking them an old one that maybe has issues just in case, you might look into having one or two singles made then a double.... that's a lot of weight on your belt they have the ability to put different types of attachments on the kydex so that's something to consideration for a vest type pouch

This is what you want. I run them in a Vietnam era gunbelt as pictured with suspenders and like it. You can also put them on any molle vest as Richard does.

I use one of these Condor chest panels --- Condor MCR3 Modular Chest Panel, about $22 (since it is open back it is cooler than wearing a vest in hot weather) -- I mount a double or triple AR 15 pouch with molle (which will hold either Zmags or Coffin mags) then 2 of the Lage drum holders. With a drum in the weapon to start you can easily have 360 rounds on board. If you double up the triple pouch add another 150, plus another drum holder 70 more. If 580 rounds is not enough you could hang more drums and mags on your belt/pockets.

Chest panel, triple Ar pouch and 2 Lage (or the canteen holders) should cost less than $125. You do not have to buy it all once, you add stuff as needed.

Of course the problem becomes the weight of it all. The advantage of a chest rig is the distribution of that weight, which it does much better than a belt in my opinion.

The truth is, if you have 3 drums, you should have more than enough ammo for most stages.

Knob Creek style matches will require you to carry all your ammo at once but 400 rounds should do it.

just my 2 cents

I use a mollie vest and use the lage carriers.

Ive also got a large pouch on my hip to toss the empties. We call it the garbage can

Unload, Toss into the pouch and grab the fresh one. Practice reloads. Typically I start with the count of 10, but after a few minutes of practice and muscle memory I get it down to a count of 4. Then you show up to shoot, get nervous and screw up anyways

I have some Russian ppsh 41 drums with pouches. Those pouches look like they’d fit Suomi drums. You might want to look at those pouches for your match

I have a business meeting in Houston tomorrow so will find a mil surplus store and maybe pickup a couple canteen holders or other similar sized pouches. Don’t want to spend a ton of money until I actually attend a Subgun match this weekend and get to see what others are using, and talk to them, etc. Ill probably end up with Lage clips, but need to find what works best for me.

I can’t clain credit to the USGI canteen holders for Suomi drum carriers. Way back when, Richard recommended these to me. This was prior to designing and producing his drum carriers. Necessity is the mother of invention.

Today I use the Lage drum carriers when needed, and use the canteen pouches to store and protect my best all four numbers matching Suomi drums.

Whether you use the canteen pouches or Lage carriers, you’ll likely need USGI suspenders for your USGI belt. Trust me on this. Several loaded drums are very heavy.

I use the canteen carriers, and a load bearing vest. I ended up sewing them to the vest using a speedy-stitcher. I have three pouches and a mag-pouch. That's 70 rounds, x3 + 50, which is quite a lot of weight. Total cost involved is maybe $30, counting the cost of the stitcher and everything. I looked at the Lage clips.. but like everything Lage, it's good stuff, and the cost reflects the quality.

I tried the belt/suspenders, but found the canteen pouches flopped around too much, and made it difficult to get the drums out of the pouches.

I bought a GI belt along with GI suspenders and three canteen covers. It all seems to fit and amazingly heavy with full drums. Hopefully, I will be able to test the gear this weekend. If things go well, perhaps an upgrade to what I observe from other shooters and their recommendations. Thanks.
