Came across a Uzi bolt for sale locally and its on a form 4 and its cheap!!! The guy selling it needs cash quick for house repairs. The bolt looks odd though? Look at the serial number. That silver half moon around the last number or the serial number?? I know, I know, I know NEVER post a pic of a serial number, but it's the only way to show you guys the question. Ty in advance.

SWD used to sell a slotted bolt that had a small pin welded into/thru the slot (vertically).......that way it "technically" wasn't a slotted bolt till the pin was milled away......

Perhaps that was what was in the discolored area???

The form 4 states B G as the manufacture.

B&G was a common bolt manufacturer, I have never really seen any of their full conversions floating around, I would imagine $5k or less would be a great deal ???

That would be too good. I would've bought it if it was 5k. It's that last digit that concerns me in the serial number??

That bare steel area is were someone ran an endmill in to remove the last number then stamped a 4 were the original number was. You are left with a registered bolt with an altered/defaced serial number. I would not even let that near my shop. I certainly would not give him a dime for it, it is illegal.

Are we certain that's the s/n of the bolt? Could it be some other innocuous number like a part number? Reason I ask is I dont see the manufacturer engraved on there. Wouldnt B&G have engraved their name and s/n very close together? Maybe thats not even the registered s/n?.?.?.

I have a B&G bolt and that's where B&G put the serial number so it's visible through the ejection port. The makers info is on the other side.

Thanks Kramer, that answers that. I still wonder if B&G did that for some reason, like it was an error, or if some yahoo really took it upon himself to make an illegal bolt. Seems like milling that digit space completely out would be a lot of precise work, something a manuf would do. Who knows, obviously the safest bet is to assume the worst and stay away from anything with an altered looking s/n. It would suck being an unsuspecting buyer and getting stuck holding the hot potato.

If you were able to see the owner's paperwork, and the serial number matched the number on the bolt, how would the bolt be illegal?

The bolt is illegal because the serial number was defaced/altered. It is illegal to alter or deface the serial number of any firearm.

That would be true if it was done after it was in the registry. The serial number would be on the receiver before. When it was made, couldn't B&G make up anything they want to be a serial number?

Can you - or more importantly, the ATF / federal prosecutor - prove that the serial number was put on the bolt after that piece was milled out? Maybe that happened during the initial manufacturing process, before serialization.

Not that I'd want to play that game with the feds.

It's possible that when they originally stamped the serial number the last digit might not have been deep or clear enough to see. Or they might have stamped two bolts in a row with the same number and milled the last digit out and re-stamped the correct number. You would need to see the Form 4 to verify the number.

Is there anything (letters, numbers) on the left side of the bolt?

Hi Komodoj,

It wouldn't be the first time someone lost their paperwork. If it is good to go BATF will send a copy with an embossed seal and there will be no stamp.

There was a time, long, long ago, when a lump of metal with a few numbers was not worth more than the cost to machine it, when a $200 stamp was a major cost of the purchase.

It is a bit odd on the #4 on the bolt. I would have thought the maker would have removed the entire area if it were a goof and start again. On the other hand, see the above comment from the past.

Good Luck,

K2

I have seen plenty of B-G bolts that had the company info electro-penciled on like in that pic.

Note: Many B-G bolts were cut down for the mini and that electro-penciled info was probably lost when they cut the bolt down and re-marked the bolt.
