I have the opportunity to buy a new Rock River Arms 9mm uppper in the A2 configuration, in stock right now.

Everywhere I've looked, a flattop upper is nowhere to be found, and eta is unknown.

Do any of you wise Uzi guys have an informed opinion on one vs. the other, in particular, what the best option is for mounting optics on the A2.

I plan to use either an Eotech or Aimpoint on this rifle, so that's my number one concern.

Just looking for some good opinions here...

Thanks in advance!

You could always buy a seperate Flattop upper and swap over the barrel, brass deflector and dust cover to it. Then sell the stripped A2 upper to recoup the cost.

I thought about that... I know the 9mm doesn't have a gas block, tube, etc. but are there still headspace issues, etc. to worry about with a blow-back setup like this?

If you're swapping the entire barrel between upper receivers there will be no change in the head spacing. The head space is set up with the barrel and barrel extension. Since those are permanently attached and will be moved together it's not an issue.

Side note, I love your avatar. Just for shits and giggles I saved it to my hard drive and then set it as my desktop wallpaper "tiled". Talk about an eyeful! ;)

An EOTech on a flat-top works out perfectly. Have you tried Bravo Company USA or Eagle Firearms for an upper? They're both good to deal with.

Okay, so now another debate... I can get the flattop that I really want, but only in a mid-length size.

I'm a little hesitant due to the rather "new" mid-length size, since there aren't as many gadgets made for it...

BUT, I did see that both KAC and ARMS make their rail systems in a mid-length now, so I think I'll go for it, and use the KAC free-floater handguard.

If any of you know of a cheaper free-float tube with high quality (reliable, good finish) that's available in a mid-lenght size, please let me know.

Pics will follow, once it's all bought and put together, of course.

Yankee Hill Machine makes high-quality free-float rail handguards that are much cheaper than KAC. Several other companies sell YHM products as their own (including Bushmaster).

I know that Eagle Firearms sells YHM products.
