I would like to know if the A2 upgrades on the AR/M16 series of receivers has made a difference or not in the life expectancy of the weapon. Being I just bought a Colt M16A1 I would like to know if there are any inherit problem with the A1 receiver design.

TIA,
David in Iraq

In civilian life, there is no difference in life expectancy.

In the military, the A2 reenforcements do help -- you can butt-stroke twice as many bad guys before an A2 receiver will break at the rear extension. And you can open the action on an A2, pivot the upper receiver forward, and throw it on the ground many more times than you can with an A1 without a crack.

Both an A1 and an A2 lower will crack/break with such abuse, but the A2 will take it slightly longer.

If you're going to those sort of things with a $10k+ transferable, well...:(

If you treat them with care -- avoid dropping them repeatedly on concrete, etc -- A1s will outlive you.:D

You may find that the A1 with it's 1 in 12 twist rate will not stablize the heavier 69 grain bullets. It will/should treat you with MOA groups using 55 grain bullets. If you want to upgrade the rear sight with a dial instead of the ball detent style Brownell's sells them. It will move your windage but not your elevation, on the down side it may be moved on it's own or with some "help". The handguards are easy enough to replace if you want the round guards instead of the triangular ones...www.Tapco.com has them for around $14. Trijicon also sell's the replacement front sight post for around $55 if you want a night sight post. Best of luck & happy shooting!!
