A young man, that works at his family owned Class 3 offered to buy this from an older gentleman (The older gentleman went to a few other local dealers and they all seemed to pass, not sure why). The young man was hesitant and offered it to me instead. I told the older gentleman that the was worth more than the $3k he was offered but the older gentleman didn’t care. He said “I just want it gone!”; therefore, we made the same deal and he was selling two of his homes to move out of state and needed to move it. The entire transfer was a pain and a lot of travel back and forth but it was worth it.
I gave the young man $500 for the referral, once it was finally approved and in my possession. So technically, I guess you could say I paid $3.5K.
I’ve been going to the same family owned class 3 forever and having a great relationship with them made this happen.

Best deal I’ll likely ever make. I already have a Sten but nothing wrong with two.

About 7-8 years ago the FFL who was handling my transfers put me in touch with an elderly couple in their 80's who 'had a machine gun' they wanted to sell.

It turns out his bother died 20 years prior and left a STEN to his still living brother via his Will. Unfortunately, the elderly couple could not produce and BATF Forms and my FFL had no luck with his contacts in the BATF to shed any light on legal ownership. We both really, REALLY tried.

The elderly couple just couldn't grasp the importance of any of this and had no recollection of any such paperwork ever, including the period during the deceased brother's death.

I spent several months trying to explain to the wife (because apparently the husband had dementia) how this paperwork was extremely important and the consequences of attempted transfer without it but I eventually gave up because it was clear they weren't capable and wouldn't engage anyone who could legally assist them.

I suspect the deceased brother owned it for a long time, it was never registered even during the amnesty period. Quite unfortunate, and I've often wondered what happened to it when the then owners passed. or had to move out of their home as they aged.

I told my FFL that at some point they should just part it out, have someone cut the receiver and toss the serialized piece in the trash / river; it would save some poor Estate Administrator a lot of heartache and false hope.
